BABSON PARK, Fla. (January 30, 2021) – After finishing with 14 runs on 16 hits in game one of the series on Friday night, the nationally-recognized Webber International University baseball team returned to the field on Saturday and split its final two games with Florida National University. In game one, the Warriors struggled to hit and fell 7-3 after collecting only five hits, and then in game two, Webber only had six hits but managed a walk off to win at 7-6 on an error in the bottom of the seventh inning.
In the series finale, Webber (2-2 overall) trailed 1-0 in the top of the first, 3-2 in the top of the third, 5-4 in the top of the fifth and 6-4 in the top of the sixth before a two-run home run to left center by
Angel Diaz tied it up in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Then after
Rey Rodriguez (1-0) stranded the bases loaded in the top of the seventh, Webber put together the winning run in the bottom half as
Griffin Todd was hit by a pitch with one out. He was then replaced on the base paths by
Tavion Williams, who quickly stole second base, advanced to third on a fielder's choice, and then scored the winning run on an error by the Florida National (3-4) first baseman on a pop up by
Steven Lugo.
Rodriguez earned the win on the mound after allowing only two hits, one run and zero earned runs over his two innings pitched.
In game one on Saturday, Webber trailed 6-0 after four innings and had only two hits to that point.
Luis Acevedo finished 2-for-3 in game one while
Rougie Odor scored twice. In game two,
Victor Florentino was 2-for-4 while Diaz was 1-for-2 with two runs scored, two runs batted in and two walks.
With its first series win of the new season under its belt, the Webber baseball team will play its fifth straight game at home to open up the year as the Warriors host Crooked Lake rival Warner University at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, February 2, in Babson Park, Florida. One day later, the two teams will play at 6 p.m. again on Wednesday, February 3, but that meeting will come across the lake in Lake Wales, Florida.
