Women’s basketball earns third straight season sweep over Warner

BABSON PARK, Fla. (January 26, 2021) – Backed by a season-high 20 points from LeAndra Franklin, the Webber International University women's basketball team completed its sixth straight victory and third straight series sweep over its Crooked Lake rival Warner University, winning 69-61 over the Royals on Tuesday evening inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center.

Webber (12-4 overall, 8-3 The Sun Conference) doubled up Warner (6-13, 1-11) at 22-11 after the first quarter and never trailed in the contest despite the Royals winning both the second and fourth quarters.

In the first quarter, the Warriors led 15-4 five and half minutes in on a jumper by Dasia Wandick, and then led 20-6 with a minute left in the period on a jumper by Erica Foote. Webber shot 57.14 percent (8-14) in the first quarter while limiting the Royals to 23.81 (5-21) shooting in the period.

However, Warner battled to get within five at 33-28 with a little over a minute and a half left before halftime, and finished the second quarter shooting 64.29 percent (9-14) from the field in the period.

Then in the third quarter, Webber again dominated and took its largest lead of the game up 16 at 52-36 on a layup by Franklin with three minutes left in the period.

The Warriors led by 14 three times in the fourth quarter, the final time coming at 64-50 on a jumper by Franklin with 5:25 left to play. From there, the Royals went on a 9-1 run over four and a half minutes to get back to within six at 65-59 with under a minute to play, but fortunately, Webber connected on four free throws in the final minute to keep Warner from getting any closer.

Three of those free throws in the final minute for Webber came from Franklin, who scored her 20 points on 5-for-8 shooting from the field and 9-for-11 shooting from the free throw line while also adding six steals, five rebounds and three assists.

Franklin was one of five Warriors with five or more rebounds, and was one of four with three or more assists on the night.

Paris Copeland had 14 points, six rebounds and five assists; Amaya Small also had 14 points and added a team-high seven rebounds; and Wandick had five points, six boards and three assists.

In only two days, Webber will remain at home to host Florida Memorial University at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 28, inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center. Back on December 5 of this season, the Warriors defeated the Lady Lions by a final score of 86-83 on the road after leading 52-35 at halftime.
