THOMASVILLE, Ga. (January 23, 2021) – Two days after defeating Ave Maria University for the second time on the season, the Webber International University women's basketball team did the same thing to Thomas University, earning its second win so far this year over the Night Hawks with a 69-58 victory on Saturday inside the TU Gymnasium.
Webber (11-4 overall, 7-3 The Sun Conference), which previously defeated Thomas (1-10, 1-10) 78-49 at home back on November 19 after outscoring the Night Hawks 20-1 in the second quarter, outscored Thomas 15-5 throughout the first five minutes of the third quarter this time around to take control of the game.
Dasia Wandick led all scorers with 20 points to match her career-high as she finished 7-for-10 (70 percent) from the field and was a perfect 3-for-3 from 3-point range. Wandick also added eight rebounds, a career-best four steals, and had two blocks.
Next in scoring was
LeAndra Franklin with 17 points on 6-for-9 shooting overall and 2-for-4 shooting from three. It was yet another great performance all-around for Franklin, who also finished with six assists, five steals and five rebounds. It was her third straight game with at least four steals and was her second straight outing with six assists.
Amaya Small finished with 10 points and six rebounds;
Samantha Pacheco had eight points, five steals and four assists;
Eletra Graham had seven points, and
Rushell Jacob had five points.
After leading by five at halftime at 33-28, the 15-5 run to open the second half for Webber made it a 15-point margin at 48-33.
The Warriors then led by 17 at 56-39 at the end of three quarters following a jumper by Pacheco.
In all for the third quarter, Webber outscored Thomas 23-11, shot 55.6 percent (10-18) from the field, and hit three of its six 3-point tries, all while holding Thomas to 26.3 percent (5-19) shooting in the period.
Earlier in the game, the first half was the Wandick show for the Warriors as she scored nine of Webber's 16 points in the first quarter, including a 3-pointer with 33 seconds left to put Webber up by three at 16-13.
In the second quarter, Wandick opened up the period with a layup to put Webber up by three again at 18-15.
The Warriors then led by five at 22-17 on a layup by Franklin two minutes into the second quarter before a 9-0 run for the Night Hawks put Webber behind by four at 26-22 with just over three minutes left until halftime.
With only one minute left before the break, Wandick scored another layup to tie the game at 28-28, giving her 15 of Webber's first 28 points of the game. That was followed by two free throws by Franklin with 45 seconds left after her third steal of the game to that point.
Graham then connected on a 3-pointer on the third assist by Franklin with only two seconds left to put Webber up by five again at 33-28 heading into the locker room.
It was an 11-2 run to close out the first half for Webber, which also had 11 steals on 15 Thomas turnovers, and led the game 14-8 on points off turnovers at halftime.
The Warriors will now return home to the Sabbagh Athletic Center for their second meeting this season against Crooked Lake rival Warner University at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, January 26. Earlier this season on December 30, the Warriors defeated the Royals by a final score of 69-48 on the road.
