Women’s basketball beats Ave Maria for second time this season

BABSON PARK, Fla. (January 21, 2021) – The Webber International University women's basketball team returned to the court for the first time in 12 days and earned its second win this season over Ave Maria University, defeating the Gyrenes by 10, 67-57, on Thursday evening inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center.

Webber (10-4 overall, 6-3 The Sun Conference), which previously defeated Ave Maria (4-9, 1-6) 63-51 on the road back on November 12, led 33-24 at halftime after limiting the Gyrenes to only one field goal in the second quarter. The Warriors also led 10-1 on second chance points and 13-6 on points off turnovers at the half.

The Warriors then led the game by as much as 20 points in the third quarter at 46-26 with 5:41 to go in the period.

Ave Maria cut its deficit back down to only five points at 46-41 with a huge 15-0 run ending with 2:11 left in the third quarter before Webber took a 10-point lead at 53-43 heading into the fourth quarter.

Ave Maria then started the fourth quarter with a 6-0 run to make it 53-49 with 5:46 on the clock, but Webber was able to stretch its lead back to 13 at 64-51 thanks to an 11-2 run over a four-minute span.

Also in the fourth quarter, Webber was able to finish the game off by making eight of its nine free throw attempts in the period.

The Warriors finished the game with 21 offensive rebounds and outscored Ave Maria 23-10 on second chance points, and the Warriors also finished with 17 steals on 28 turnovers by the Gyrenes, outscoring them 35-6 on points off turnovers.

Eletra Graham scored a season-high 18 points to lead the Warriors while Amaya Small recorded her third double-double of the season by finishing with 16 points, 10 rebounds, and four steals.

Rushell Jacob added eight points and seven rebounds; LeAndra Franklin had six points, six assists and four steals; Dasia Wandick had six points and six boards; and Samantha Pacheco had five points and five assists.

In only two days, Webber will play on the road at Thomas University starting at 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 23, in Thomasville, Georgia, and then three days after that, the Warriors will host their Crooked Lake rival Warner University at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, January 26, inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center.
