Men’s basketball takes down nationally-recognized Warner at home

BABSON PARK, Fla. (January 21, 2021) – Five players scored in double figures for the Warriors as the Webber International University men's basketball team earned a hard-fought 79-75 win at home over nationally-recognized Warner University on Thursday night inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center.

Jaylon Myles led Webber with 21 points, Kris Goettert had 18 points and nine rebounds, Rasheem Etienne had 15 points, and Loro Natana had a career-high 11 points and six rebounds. However, the best stat line of the night may have come from Eddie Davis, who scored 11 points to go along with seven assists and seven rebounds, all while also not missing a single shot or free throw attempt.

Webber outscored Warner 47-41 in the second half after shooting 56.67 percent from the field and making 12 of their 14 free throw attempts in the period.

In all, the game featured nine lead changes and seven ties, including five lead changes and five ties in the second half alone.

The last time the game was tied was at 67-67 with 3:44 left to play before a layup by Natana assisted by Davis, followed by a tough, contested midrange jumper by Myles made it a 71-67 Warrior lead with 2:11 on the clock.

Then, with the Warriors up 75-73 with only 22 seconds to go, Myles inbounded the ball from next to Webber's own bench, and found a wide open Natana for the dunk; and then two free throws by Davis with 10 seconds left made it a six-point game at 79-73.

In the end, Webber's 53.4 field goal percentage on the game was the Warriors' second highest of the season so far.

Webber's Head Men's Basketball Coach Gabriel Rutledge said after the win, "It was an amazing team win tonight over a championship program across the lake. I'm proud of the energy and effort our guys played with tonight. Multiple guys made winning plays throughout the game. It started at Monday's practice after a tough road loss, and the guys showed up hungry to get better. My staff did a tremendous job preparing us for the battle against Warner. I want to thank the fans and the cheerleaders for their support throughout what was an entertaining game. We couldn't have done it without them. We will continue to grow and build a special program. Go Warriors."

With the big win over its rival, Webber improved to 8-13 overall and 4-7 in The Sun Conference while Warner, which entered the game on a seven-game winning streak starting with its 79-72 win over Webber back on November 21, fell to 10-3 and 8-3. It was also the third win for Webber so far this season over a team in first place in The Sun Conference Men's Basketball Standings at the time.

Next up for Webber will be a road game at Thomas University starting at 4 p.m. on Saturday, January 23, in Thomasville, Georgia.
