Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Myles scores career-high 34 points as men’s basketball drops nail-biter at Thomas

THOMASVILLE, Ga. (January 23, 2021) – Two days after he scored 21 points to lead the Warriors to an upset win over the first-place team in The Sun Conference, Jaylon Myles scored a career-high 34 points for the Webber International University men's basketball team on Saturday at Thomas University, but in the end, the Warriors fell by a heartbreaking final score of 70-68.

It was a slow start for Webber as the Warriors' only lead of the game came at 2-0 on a steal and a layup by Rasheem Etienne.

However, the Warriors quickly let up eight straight points to the Night Hawks and then fell behind 15-3 just over five minutes in. Webber had already committed five turnovers and allowed three 3-pointers to that point, and then with just under nine minutes left in the first half, the fifth 3-pointer by Thomas made it 25-11 before the Warriors found themselves being doubled up at 32-16 with five minutes left before halftime.

Early in the second half, Myles tried to lead the Warrior comeback as he scored 11 points in a row to get Webber to within six at 45-39 just over five minutes into the period.

With just under seven minutes left to play, two free throws by Etienne capped a 6-0 Warrior run to make it a five-point game at 55-50.

Then with 3:14 to go, a layup by Deante Green got Webber's deficit down to only four at 64-60 before Myles reached 30 points and again made it a four-point game at 66-62 on a jumper with 2:21 left.

With just under two minutes reaming, Myles came up with a steal and hit a free throw to make it 66-63, and then he made it only a two-point game at 68-66 with a 3-pointer with 1:20 on the clock.

After two free throws by the Night Hawks, Eddie Davis hit a jumper to make it 70-68 with 46 seconds remaining. Then after a 3-point miss by Thomas with 19 seconds left, the Warriors came up short on the game-tying layup with only seven seconds left, and then missed the potential game-winning 3-pointer as time expired.

The Warriors finished the game shooting a great 52.8 percent from the field, including a percentage of 59.3 percent in the second half alone and a 40 percent mark from three in the second half.

Myles did his damage on 13-for-20 shooting from the field while making three 3-pointers and adding five rebounds and four steals. He scored 25 of his 34 points in the second half, finishing 9-of-13 overall and 3-of-6 from three over the final 20 minutes.

Davis was the only other Warrior in double figures in scoring as he had 11 points. Loro Natana added eight points and eight rebounds; and Etienne finished with eight points, six boards and three steals.

With the tough loss, Webber fell to 8-14 overall and 4-8 in The Sun Conference while Thomas earned its third win in a row to improve to 6-11 and 6-5. It was the fourth Saturday in a row in the month of January Webber had erased a large second-half deficit on the road to make it close at the end before being unable to come all the way back and complete the victory.

Next up, Webber returns home to play against Florida Memorial University for the second time this season at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 28. Webber fell 68-65 to FMU in the first meeting between the two teams back on December 5 in Miami Gardens, Florida.
