WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (January 2, 2021) – After trailing by 10 points twice in the second half, the Webber International University women's basketball team started off the New Year with a big 61-59 comeback victory over Keiser University on Saturday in West Palm Beach, Florida.
It was also the start of 15 consecutive Sun Conference games for the Warriors to finish off the regular season as Webber improved to 9-2 overall and 5-1 in The Sun Conference, and remained undefeated on the road so far this season at 6-0. Keiser, meanwhile, which was coming off of back-to-back double-digit wins over Florida National University and Ave Maria University and had won six of its last seven games, fell to 6-6 overall and 3-4 in the conference.
After being outscored 18-13 in each of the first two quarters and trailing by 10 points at halftime at 36-26 after a layup by
Amaya Small with only one second left before the buzzer, Webber opened up the second half on a 10-0 run to comeback and tie it at 36-36 on a jumper by
Dasia Wandick less than three minutes into the period.
Keiser, which committed six turnovers during the Warriors' 10-0 run, answered with a run of its own, a 12-2 spurt to put the Seahawks back up by 10 at 48-38 with 3:18 to go in the third quarter.
The run by Keiser was finally stopped by
Eletra Graham, who connected on her fourth 3-pointer of the game to make it 48-41 with three minutes left in the period.
A minute later, a 3-pointer by
Selena Rodriguez made it 50-44, and then with only four seconds left in the quarter, the fifth three of the game by Graham made it only a five-point margin at 52-47. Webber shot 57.14 percent (8-14) from the field in the third quarter and was 3-for-5 (60 percent) from three in the period.
Then, after Webber opened up the fourth quarter with a floater by Wandick assisted by
LeAndra Franklin to get back to within three at 52-49, that is where senior
Paris Copeland took over.
Copeland scored her first basket of a game to make it only a one-point deficit at 54-53, and then a 3-pointer by Copeland gave Webber the lead at 56-54 with 6:43 left to play, the Warriors' first lead since the score was 2-0.
Two more scores by Copeland made it a 61-54 Warrior advantage with five minutes remaining, capping a 14-2 run to open the fourth quarter by Webber.
A 3-pointer by the Seahawks with 3:43 left made it only a two-point Webber lead at 61-59, but that would prove to be the final basket of the game as Keiser turned it over five more times in the final two and a half minutes of the game. As a team, Keiser turned it over 26 times in all, and in the deciding fourth quarter, the Seahawks shot only 2-for-15 (13.33 percent) from the field as Webber came back to complete the victory.
Webber's Head Coach
Grady Morrell said, "I am very proud of my team and happy about the win today. We showed real heart on the road with everything not really going our way until the fourth quarter, but that is what it takes to win on the road in this conference."
In the first half, it was Graham who kept Webber in the game by scoring 11 of the team's first 16 points, and then she and Wandick combined for 20 of the Warriors' 26 points at halftime.
In the end, Graham finished with a game-high 17 points on 5-for-9 shooting from three, and Wandick finished with 15 points.
Franklin had an incredible all-around effort, finishing with seven points, seven assists and seven steals; and Copeland, who had all nine of her points in the fourth quarter, also added four assists earlier in the game to help get other Warriors involved.
The Warriors will now return home to the Sabbagh Athletic Center for their first home game of the New Year as Webber hosts Ave Maria at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 7. Earlier this season on November 12, the Warriors defeated the Gyrenes by a final score of 63-51 on the road.
