Men’s soccer wins 2020 season opener 3-0 over Trinity Baptist College

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (September 5, 2020) – The Webber International University men's soccer team's 2020 season opener ended in a 3-0 shutout victory for the Warriors over Trinity Baptist College on Saturday afternoon in Jacksonville, Florida.

Each of the two goals in the first half by the Warriors were scored by freshmen as approximately 15 minutes into the match, the first goal of the day came off the leg of freshman Jay Skelcher-Maxwell with the assist coming from Giovanni Galeb.

Then only a few minutes later, fellow freshman Andy Obregon scored thanks to another assist from Galeb to put the Warriors up 2-0 with TBC still without a shot in the match.

In all, the Warriors outshout the Eagles 11-5 in the first half and 23-8 overall while holding a 10-3 advantage in shots on goal.

The third and final goal for Webber came in the second half as David Negrin Ruiz scored the first goal of his senior season and ninth career goal in what is now only his second season as a Warrior.

Negrin Ruiz ultimately led the Warriors with seven total shots, four of which were on goal, while Obregon finished with five shots, three of which were on target, and Dashaun Morris had three shots.

In goal, transfer senior Alex Marciulonis and junior Fabricio Verdun split the first and second halves, respectively, and earned the combed shutout. Marciulonis made two saves and Verdun made one.

"The lads played very well today," spoke Webber's Head Men's Soccer Coach Neil Cockburn. "I was very happy with the performance of our back four, and I think our midfield did better in the second half being creative. We still have things to work on, but it was a great performance to work from moving forward."

The win for Webber (1-0) improved the Warriors' mark against Trinity Baptist (0-1) to 4-0 with one match being played between the two teams during each of the last four seasons. The Warriors were victorious over the Eagles 5-2 at home in 2017, 2-1 on the road in 2018, and 3-1 at home last season before the shutout win this time around.

Next up for the Warriors will be the second of their two nonconference matches before the start of Sun Conference play. On Monday, September 14, Webber will battle Florida College at 7 p.m. in Temple Terrace, Florida, before opening TSC play on the road in Lakeland, Florida, at 7 p.m. against Southeastern University.
