Men’s soccer suffers first loss of 2020 at Florida College

TEMPLE TERRACE, Fla. (September 14, 2020) – The Webber International University men's soccer team played on the road for the first time in 2020 on Monday night, but unfortunately the Warriors fell for the first time on the young season with a 2-1 loss at Florida College.

With Webber (1-1 overall) trailing 1-0 after a successful penalty kick by Florida College (1-0) just under 30 minutes in, Andy Obregon netted the tying goal in the 41st minute on a penalty kick of his own as the two teams entered halftime all knotted up.

After the score by Obregon, David Negrin Ruiz had a shot saved with two minutes left in the first half, and then Obregon missed wide with 10 seconds left before the break as the Warriors actually held a strong 7-2 shot advantage halftime, but were unable to take advantage with a lead.

Then, after the winning goal for the Falcons came in the 74th minute from Jesus Herrera, the Warriors had a pair of corner kicks with under nine minutes to go, but were unable to get off a shot attempt over the final 20 minutes of action.

In all, Webber led 10-6 on shot attempts and 6-0 on corner kicks, but only led 5-4 on shots on goal. Obregon led the way with three of those shots while Zachary Auger and Agustin Sanda both added two attempts.

Next up for the Webber men's soccer team in only two days will be the start of Sun Conference action as the Warriors travel to nearby Lakeland, Florida, to battle Polk County rival Southeastern University at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, September 16.
