BABSON PARK, Fla. (March 6, 2020) – The No. 16 Webber International University baseball team lost the first game of its two-game set with nationally-recognized Saint Xavier University (Ill.) 8-4 after giving up four runs in the top of the seventh, but then the Warriors bounced back with a 5-3 win in game two to salvage the day.
In game two, Webber (14-11 overall) led 3-0 in the bottom of the first inning on a two-out, three-run home run to left field by
Bryan Eusebio scoring
Norberto Navarro and
Carlo Mancillas, and then in the bottom of the third Eusebio tripled to right center to score Mancillas again and make it 4-0.
Eusebio finished 2-for-3 with four RBI's in the game.
In the bottom of the fourth,
Cale Jones single to left field with two outs before pinch runner
Tavion Williams stole second base and scored on the ensuing single to center field by
Rougie Odor to make the score 5-2.
Kyle Brana (1-0) earned the win by finishing off the final two outs of the top of the fourth inning before
Rey Rodriguez pitched three scores innings to close out the contest and earn his first career save.
In the first game of the day, Webber led 1-0 after one inning as Saint Xavier (5-8) issued four walks, the last of which was to
Matthew Wiseman with two outs to score Navarro.
The Warriors then took another one-run lead at 2-1 in the bottom of the third inning as Mancillas led off with a single to right field before scoring with two outs on a single down the right field line by
Hunter Morales.
Unfortunately, a two-run home run in the top of the fourth for the Cougars followed by another run in the top of the fifth put Saint Xavier ahead 4-2 before the Warriors came back to tie it thanks to RBI-singles by Wiseman and Mancillas in the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings, respectively.
Then with the game tied 4-4 in the top of the seventh, the Cougars were not fazed by relief pitcher
Gerig Blackman as each of the first six hitters against him recorded a hit, leading to four runs.
Next up for Webber baseball will be another doubleheader against a team from Illinois as the Warriors host the University of St. Francis (Ill.) at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 8.
