Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

Men’s volleyball beats sister school St. Andrews 3-1 behind season-high 13 team blocks

BABSON PARK, Fla. (March 5, 2020) – After needing plenty of extra scoring to win a wild second set, the Webber International University men's volleyball team stumbled late in the third set before ultimately defeating St. Andrews University 3-1 (25-18, 34-32, 22-25, 25-13) on Thursday night inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center.

In the very first set, Webber (8-3 overall, 5-2 Mid-South Conference) led by scores of 10-3, 12-5, 18-10 and 22-14 before three straight points by Orlando Fletcher, a kill and two service aces, put the first set away in favor of the Warriors.

In the second set, Webber led 10-4, 14-8 and 17-11. The Warriors then led 23-20 thanks to three straight errors by St. Andrews (5-12, 3-5) before a 4-0 run for St. Andrews gave the Knights set point, and from there that is where things got crazy. A kill by Kyle Robertson made it 24-24, and then Webber had match point eight times in a row before finally winning it on a kill by Daniel Hermida and an ace by Justin Beecher.

In the third set, the two teams were tied at 21-21 before a 4-1 run for the Knights ended it, but then Webber opened up the fourth set leading 13-5 after an 11-2 run, and then that run ballooned to 15-4 to put the Warriors ahead by 10 and 17-7. A 5-0 Warrior run bookended by kills from Bryant Herrera and Fletcher then made it 24-12 in favor of the home team.

The Warriors hit a very strong .424 percent in the second set and .417 percent in the fourth, but hit .000 percent in the third. St. Andrews hit .000 percent in the first set and was -.269 percent in the fourth while finishing at only .047 percent for the match.

The Warriors recorded a season-high 13 blocks as a team, getting eight assisted blocks from Herrera, six assisted blocks from Kyle Robertson, four total blocks from Fletcher and four assisted blocks by Beecher. It was a new career-high in blocks for both Herrera and Robertson while Fletcher tied his career-high in total blocks and Kenneth Alicea had a career-best two assisted blocks.

Steven Bartlett also aided to the Warriors' defensive effort with 13 digs, and was the only Warrior with more than one dig.

Webber combined for 39 assists as Tim Rouch Jr. delivered 23 helpers, which matched his career-high, which Robertson had 15.

Delivering the hits from the passes were Hermida with 16 kills and a .353 attack percentage, Herrera with a new career-best 12 kills and a .364 attack percentage, Fletcher with seven kills and Beecher with five kills and an attack percentage of .300.

Head Coach Carlos Jimenez said, "Tonight was an important match for the guys as we focus on the next phase of the regular season and due to the changes that have been implemented based on some of the injuries that the team has suffered. We had some close sets but the guys were able to work through some of the situations that they need to get used to and were also able to fine-tune their strategy to be ready for the next few matches."

After six straight MSC matches in a row, the Warriors will now take a break form conference play by hosting two more matches next week. Webber will battle Viterbo University at 5 p.m. on Monday, March 9, before taking on NCAA Division-II Limestone College two days later at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 11.
