No. 16 baseball splits final two games against FNU; wins series with 10-inning victory in finale

BABSON PARK, Fla. (February 8, 2020) – For the third series in a row to start its 2020 season, the No. 16 Webber International University baseball team split its Saturday doubleheader the day after winning the series opener on Friday. This time it was against Florida National University as the Warriors lost game one on Saturday 11-4 before winning the series finale 3-2 in 10 innings on the Heart of Florida Baseball Field.

Webber (6-3 overall) actually led twice by one run during the series finale before finally winning it in 10 innings. The Warriors' first lead came in the bottom of the third inning as Norberto Navarro singled up the middle with two outs, stole second base and then scored on a single through the left side by Rougie Odor to make it 1-0.

After a leadoff solo home run for Florida National (1-4) in the top of the fourth inning, the Warriors then made it 2-1 in the bottom half of the inning as Carlo Mancillas led off with a walk and came around to score four batters later on a double-play ball.

Starting pitcher Bryce McDonald tossed an effective first five innings of the game for Webber, allowing six hits, two runs and three walks to go along with three strikeouts, but it was reliever Gerig Blackman (1-0) who helped save the day and keep the Warriors in it until the 10th inning.

Blackman finished with only two hits, two walks and zero runs allowed over his five innings pitched to go along with three strikeouts as well. Blackman stranded runners in scoring position in each of the sixth, seventh and eighth innings for FNU, keeping the game tied and giving Webber a chance in extra innings.

The winning rally for the Warriors started with a leadoff single to right field by Tyler Buckner. Then, pinch runner Gene Reid II advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Nick Martinez before scoring from second on an error by the left fielder on the ensuing at bat by Navarro.

In the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, Webber actually led 3-1 after three innings thanks to a solo home run to center field by Navarro followed by a two-run home run to left field by Victor Florentino, both in the bottom of the third inning.

However, FNU responded with seven runs over the next two innings and outscored Webber 10-1 over the next four innings in total to take control. One of the highlights during the stretch of runs for FNU was a grand slam by catcher Stephan Perez-Collazo in the top of the fifth inning.

A home run by Bryan Eusebio in the bottom of the sixth inning represented the final run of the game for Webber as all four of the Warriors' runs in the contest crossed home plate thanks to the long ball.

In addition to Florentino's three hits in game one, Hunter Morales was the only other Warrior with multiple hits as he finished 2-for-4.

Next up for Webber baseball is a doubleheader at home on the Heart of Florida Field against Grand View University starting at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, February 11.
