BABSON PARK, Fla. (February 11, 2020) – For the first time this season, the Webber International University baseball team swept both games of a doubleheader as the Warriors shutout Grand View University by scores of 1-0 and 4-0 in two seven inning games on Tuesday night at the Heart of Florida Baseball Field.
Pithing the combined shutout for Webber (8-3 overall) in game one was
Hunter Morales (2-0) and
Casey Lawson, who picked up the save in his first appearance of the season.
In addition to recording five strikeouts, Morales was perfect through the first three innings of the game and only allowed one batter, a one-out single in the top of the fourth inning, to reach against him over the first five innings of the contest.
Then, Lawson finished off the final two innings allowing two hits and zero walks while striking out two batters. He stranded a two-out double on second base in the top of the eighth inning before using a 6-4-3 double play to end the game and work around a one-out single in the ninth.
What would go on to be the winning run for the Warriors in game one came all the way back in the bottom of the first inning as
Norberto Navarro led off with a triple to right field before scoring on the next at bat by
Rougie Odor, who singled toward third base.
In game number two, Webber again put together a 1-0 lead after only one inning as Odor singled to left field with one out, stole second base and then advanced to third on a fly ball to center field by
Carlo Mancillas all before scoring on a passed ball with two outs.
It was a great day for Odor as the senior finished 2-for-3 in both games of the doubleheader while also finishing with three stolen bases on the day.
Webber went on to add three more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to give its pitching staff some breathing room as Navarro came up with his second extra base hit of the day, a one-out double to left center to score both
Zachary Schneidmiller from second base and
Nick Martinez all the way from first. Then, Navarro scored on a sacrifice fly to center field with the bases loaded by pinch hitter
Jack Howard for his first run batted in of the season.
Starting game two for Webber was
Dalton Mosser, who made his first appearance of the season with two innings pitched while allowing two hits and zero walks with three strikeouts before getting out of a bases loaded jam in the top of the second inning with a swinging strikeout and a fly out to left field.
Mosser then gave way to
Rey Rodriguez (1-1), who earned his first win of the year with four strong innings of work giving up four hits and one walk with six strikeouts.
Lastly, closer
Gerig Blackman finished off the final inning, albeit in a non-save situation. Blackman has yet to allow a run against him in 11.1 innings of work so far on the season.
Next up for No. 16 Webber baseball will be the 2020 Sun Conference opener for the Warriors as Webber welcomes Ave Maria University to Babson Park, Florida, on Friday, February 14, at 6 p.m., followed by a doubleheader at 12 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Saturday, February 15.
