No. 16 baseball opens series against FNU with 7-2 victory

BABSON PARK, Fla. (February 7, 2020) – For the third series in a row to kick off its 2020 season, the Webber International University baseball team won the Friday opener of the series. This time, the Warriors defeated Florida National University 7-2 despite only finishing with three hits and scoring most of their runs in unconventional fashion.

After falling behind 1-0 after an unearned run by Florida National (0-3) in the top of the second inning, Webber (5-2) answered back in the bottom half of the second scoring twice on balks by the pitcher, scoring Matthew Wiseman and then Gene Reid II.

A two-run, two-out single to center by Victor Florentino in the bottom of the third inning scored Carlo Mancillas and Bryan Eusebio to double Webber's run total to four.

Then, the Warriors put together their third two-run inning of the ballgame in the bottom of the sixth with two more wild runs as Rougie Odor scored from second base on an error on a sacrifice bunt by Orlando Pena before Mancillas scored on a wild pitch for his second run of the game.

Lastly, following another unearned run for FNU in the top of the eighth inning, Mancillas scored for the third time as he led off the bottom of the eighth with a hit by pitch, stole both second and third base, and then scored on a hit by pitch by Nolan Soliveres four batters later.

Earning the win for the Warriors on the mound was Austin Dreher (2-1), who finished giving up zero earned runs and no walks through eight innings while allowing only six hits and striking out six batters.

Hunter Morales finished off the game with a 1-2-3 top of the ninth inning concluding with back-to-back fly outs to Florentino in right field.

In addition to Florentino, the other hits for the Warriors came from Mancillas, who singled through the left side to lead off the bottom of the third inning, and Norberto Navarro, who came up with bunt single toward third base with two outs in the bottom of the seventh.

In all, Mancillas reached base five times in the contest after also drawing three walks and being one of five hit batters for the Warriors by the FNU pitchers.

Next up, Webber and FNU will return to the Heart of Florida Baseball Field tomorrow on Saturday, February 8, to complete the series with a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m.
