Webber softball sweeps 2020 season opener over Trinity Baptist College

BABSON PARK, Fla. (February 5, 2020) – Year two of the Kristy Burton era for the Webber International University softball team kicked off with two wins over Trinity Baptist College on Wednesday, February 5, at Nancy Nichols Field. The Warriors started off their new 2020 season with an 8-3 win in game one over the Eagles before coming right back in game number two to win 13-3 in five innings.

Webber (2-0) combined for 21 runs between the two games on only 15 hits.

Coach Burton said, "Being back on the field today was a blast; we loved seeing the team just play ball. Coach Kendall Core and I were excited to see this team have such an offensive start to their season. It's always fun for our fans, and keeps the momentum on our side of the field. We were able to control both games thanks to our offense and all our pitchers working as a staff to keep us in the game. Being at home for opening day always creates a great tempo for the season. Thanks to everyone who came out to support us today and we hope to see everyone again next Wednesday."

The star of the day was junior Daisy Riggleman, who was the lone Warrior with two hits and two runs scored in game one en route to finishing 2-for-3 with a double; and then in game two Riggleman went 1-for-1 with a two-run home run to left field, her second career home run, to score the final two runs of the ballgame in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Two Warriors finished 2-for-3 in game two as junior Mary-Margaret Maggard was 2-for-3 with two runs batted in and a stolen base, and fellow-junior Samantha Rolfe was also 2-for-3 with an RBI-triple in the bottom of the fourth.

Another junior, Kelsea Friend, scored twice in both games of the doubleheader and also added a stolen base in both games.

Other Warriors to score twice during game number two were junior Krista Hoyt and senior Victoria Atkinson.

In the circle, Raven White (1-0) started her senior year off right, earning the win by tossing the first four innings of the game allowing only two hits, one run, zero earned runs, and one walk.

Senior Emma Maitland (1-0) finished off the final three innings of game one surrendering two runs but allowing only one hit. She struck out five batters during those three innings and earned her first career save before getting the start in game two and striking out six batters through four innings and allowing only one hit, three runs, one earned run, and one walk.

Yet a third senior pitcher for the Warriors, Dariyen Moss, finished off the final inning of game two allowing only one hit in the top of the fifth.

After a pair of exhibition games at home against Broward College starting at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, February 12, the Warriors will return to regular-season action at the 2020 RussMatt Softball NAIA Invitational on Friday, February 14, and Sunday, February 16, at the Polk State Diamond Plex in Winter Haven, Florida.
