Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

Warriors grind out five-set victory over Reinhardt

BABSON PARK, Fla. (February 29, 2020) – After the Warriors won each of the first two sets and looked to be in control, it took three more sets to determine a winner as the Webber International University men's volleyball team defeated Reinhardt University 3-2 (25-20, 25-14, 23-25, 21-25, 15-10) in a spirited contest on Saturday morning inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center.

The Warriors put up some gaudy numbers individually as Daniel Hermida had a match high-17 kills while adding seven digs, four service aces and four blocks.

Justin Beecher and Bryant Herrera both added a season-high 11 kills while Herrera also matched Hermida with four blocks. Beecher hit .600 percent for the match while Herrera hit .400 percent.

One day after recording a season-high 17 digs, Steven Bartlett finished with a new career-high in digs with 21 while also matching his career-best with six assists.

Tim Rouch Jr. and Kyle Robertson both recorded their first career double-doubles by finishing with a career-high 10 digs and 21 and 16 assists, respectively. Robertson also approached triple-double territory by adding a career-best eight kills, the same number recorded by Orlando Fletcher.

Last but not least, Sabian Cardona Martinez added three digs while Christian Quezada recorded his first career dig and first career service ace.

Webber won the second set on a 7-0 run and hit .423 percent as a team in the frame compared to -.037 percent for Reinhardt. However, after that, Reinhardt ratcheted up the intensity and won each of the next two sets by less than four points.

Reinhardt led 24-19 in the third set before holding off a 4-0 Warrior run to get within one at 24-23, and then in the fourth set Webber led 10-7 before an 8-0 run for the Eagles put them ahead 15-10. The Warriors then trailed 20-14 but got back to within two at 20-18 with a 4-0 run before the two teams split the next seven points and Reinhardt won the last two to tie the match at 2-2.

In the deciding fifth set, Webber hit .364 percent and held the Eagles to .000 percent. Webber trailed 4-1 before coming back to lead 6-5 on a kill by Fletcher and then at 8-6 on a kill by Kenneth Alicea. With Reinhardt back to within one at 9-8, a 4-0 Warrior run opened up the margin to five at 13-8 and all but put it away.

10 matches into the season, Webber is now 7-3 overall on the season and is 4-2 in the Mid-South Conference while Reinhardt fell to 4-13 and 2-5.

The Warriors will host their third consecutive MSC match at home on Thursday, March 5, welcoming St. Andrews University into the Sabbagh Athletic Center for a 7 p.m. start time. It will be the second meeting this season between the Warriors and the Knights with Webber winning the first matchup 3-0 on the road back on February 2.
