Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s basketball wins 2019-20 regular-season finale over Thomas; clinches No. 6 seed in TSC Tournament

THOMASVILLE, Ga. (February 22, 2020) – Following a 76-66 victory over Thomas University on the road on Saturday, the Webber International University men's basketball team is officially headed to the postseason for the first time in the Allen Corbin era. The Warriors' win over the Night Hawks came on the final day of the 2019-20 regular season as now Webber will have three days to prepare for its Sun Conference quarterfinal matchup on the road.

"I am thrilled to close out the season with two straight wins in which we had to battle a ton of adversity," spoke Coach Corbin. "Our guys showed guts, toughness and composure down the stretch. We have really started to share the basketball as we have had 20-plus assists now in back-to-back games. This is a huge deal to have a winning season and make the playoffs in one of the toughest conferences in the nation. I am very happy to have a role and be a small part of the success."

The Warriors had four players finish in double figures in scoring and were led by junior Tommie Luke with 27 points on 11-for-17 shooting from the field overall and impressive 5-for-7 shooting from 3-point range. It was the sixth straight game with 20 or more points to end the regular season for Luke and was his seventh time this year reaching 27 or more points.

Next in scoring for Webber was freshman Javonni Quince with 15 points and 10 assists, which was good for his fifth double-double of the season. The 15 points for Quince were tied for his second most in a single game this season while the 10 assists were a new career-high.

The final two Warriors in double figures in scoring were junior Jaylon Myles with 12 points and six rebounds and senior Malik Morrow with 10 points and eight boards.

Lastly, freshman Kris Goettert finished with seven points and six rebounds while junior Joel Coffey added five boards.

Despite Webber being outshot from the field in both halves by the Night Hawks, the Warriors hit two more 3-pointers than Thomas and reached 10 or more threes in a game for the 12th time on the year.

In addition to the two extra 3-pointers, the biggest difference in the game might have been at the free throw line, where despite nearly the same number of attempts, Webber shot a strong 83.3 percent (10-12) compared to a bad 36.4 percent (4-11) from Thomas.

In the turnover battle, the Warriors committed only 11 turnovers while taking advantage of 18 Thomas turnovers to win the battle of points off turnovers 19-7.

It was a terrific start to the game for Luke and the Warriors as after back-to-back 3-pointers by Luke put Webber ahead 8-5 two minutes and 40 seconds into the game, the Warriors never trailed the rest of the way as Luke added another three followed by a three by Quince, which in all accounted for the first 12 points of a 14-0 Webber run to make it 16-5 four minutes into the action.

In all, Luke accounted for 15 of Webber's first 20 points of the game as the Warriors led 20-7 and went on to lead by 13 points two more times in the first half at 27-14 on a layup by Goettert with nine and a half minutes left in the half and then again at 39-26 after two free throws by Quince two minutes before the break.

Late in the second half and after yet another three by Luke again put Webber ahead by 13 points at 67-54 with just over eight minutes remaining, Thomas got back to within four at 67-63 with 3:42 left to play thanks to a 9-0 run.

Fortunately for Webber, the Warriors responded with a jumper by Morrow on their next possession followed by a 3-pointer by Myles a minute and a half later to go back up by nine at 72-63 with only two minutes left.

With the regular season now over, Webber sits at 15-14 overall and 8-10 in The Sun Conference while Thomas ended its year 6-20 and 3-15. It is the most wins both overall and during conference play for the Warriors under Coach Corbin (three years), and is their most conference wins since 2014-15 (9-9) and most overall wins since 2012-13 (16-12).

Now, Webber will head into the TSC postseason tournament for the first time since the 2015-16 season. The Warriors will be the No. 6 seed this year, and will travel south to Miami Gardens, Florida, to take on No. 3 St. Thomas University (20-5, 13-5) at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, February 25, during the quarterfinal round.
