No. 16 baseball falls to nationally-recognized Keiser by one, then run-ruled

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (February 21, 2020) – In its first test of the season against a fellow team mentioned in the 2020 NAIA Baseball Coaches' Preseason Top 25 Poll, the No. 16 Webber International University baseball team lost twice in Sun Conference action against nationally-recognized Keiser University on Friday. The Warriors lost by only one run, 5-4, in game one before putting up no resistance in a 15-0 defeat in seven innings in game two.

In the first game, Webber trailed 2-0 after one inning as the Seahawks opened the series with a sacrifice fly followed by a solo home run off of starting pitcher Austin Dreher in the bottom of the first.

Then, the Warriors took their only lead of the day with a three-run top of the sixth inning on an RBI-double to right field by Carlo Mancillas followed by back-to-back RBI-singles by Hunter Morales and Ricky Neyman.

Unfortunately, the Seahawks answered back with three runs of their own in the bottom of the seventh with four straight hits during a two-out rally to re-take the lead.

In the top of the eighth, the Warriors tried to take advantage of back-to-back errors by the home team along with a passed ball on a strikeout and a wild pitch as they scored an unearned run to make it a one-run game at 5-4, but Webber was unable to tie the game even with the bases loaded and only one out after grounding into an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play.

In the second game of Friday's doubleheader, the Warriors had the same number of hits as they did errors, which was five, and gave up two home runs.

After a five-run bottom of the third for Keiser, the Seahawks blew it wide open with seven runs on six hits, one of which was a first-pitch grand slam, in the bottom of the fourth to make it 13-0.

Mancillas was 2-for-5 with two runs scored in game one while the lone Warrior with two hits in game two was Orlando Pena going 2-for-3.

The Warriors and the Seahawks will return to the field tomorrow on Saturday, February 22, at 11 a.m. as Webber looks to avoid being swept for the first time on the season. Webber will enter the final game of the series 11-5 overall and 3-2 in The Sun Conference while Keiser is now 10-3 and 2-2 with its first two conference wins of the season coming on Friday.
