Women’s basketball fights hard but falls on Senior Night against nationally-recognized Coastal Georgia

BABSON PARK, Fla. (February 20, 2020) – The postseason-bound Webber International University women's basketball team finished up its final regular season home game of the 2019-20 season with a 76-69 loss on Senior Night against a College of Coastal Georgia team that is receiving votes in the latest NAIA Division II Women's Basketball Coaches' Top 25 Poll, but it will not be the final game this season inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center as the Warriors have already locked up home court advantage for the first round of The Sun Conference Tournament next week.

It was Senior Night for No. 5 Breyonna Reed, No. 11 Emmarrie Carmen, No. 15 RayGene Garner, No. 30 Dysheka Price and the manager Jakella Davis.

The leading scorer among the seniors was Price with eight points, six rebounds and two blocks. Garner finished with six points and four rebounds; Carmen added four points and seven rebounds; and the final senior, Reed, had four points, three boards and three assists.

The lone Warrior in double figures in scoring was junior Paris Copeland with 14 points on 6-for-11 shooting. Copeland also added five rebounds and was one of five different Warriors with five or more boards.

Junior LeAndra Franklin had nine points and five assists, junior Eletra Graham also had nine points on three 3-pointers, sophomore Thalia Jackson had seven points and six boards, sophomore Taniya Patrick had four points and five blocked shots, and sophomore Amaya Lasley had four points and seven rebounds.

The Warriors shot 50 percent from the field in the second quarter to lead by as much as 11 (40-29) with only a minute left in the period after two free throws by Price.

Overall in the second quarter, Webber outscored Coastal Georgia 24-13 in the period to lead the game by 10 (40-30) at halftime.

At the break, the Warriors led 8-3 in points off turnovers, but that all changed in the second half as Webber committed 13 of its 18 turnovers in the second half compared to three for the Mariners and was outscored 21-9 in points off turnovers for the game.

In the third quarter, a layup by Copeland gave Webber a 13-point lead at 54-41 with two and a half minutes left in the period as the Warriors looked to be on their way to taking down the second-place team in The Sun Conference.

A jumper by Lasley to end the third quarter made it an eight-point Webber advantage at 56-48 with only 10 minutes left to play, but in the deciding fourth quarter, Webber was held to only 5-for-17 shooting (29.41 percent) and was 0-for-4 from three while Coastal Georgia shot 50 percent (7-14) from the field in the period.

Webber still led by seven points at 64-57 with over six minutes left in the game before the Mariners tied it at 66-66 with 3:39 to go, finishing off a 9-2 run for the visiting team.

A free throw by Jackson put the Warriors back ahead by one at 67-66 with 2:22 left before a 6-0 run for Coastal Georgia over the next two minutes made it a 72-67 Mariner lead with 32 seconds left to play.

With only 20 seconds left, Jackson scored a layup to make it a one-possession game at 72-69, but two more free throws for the Mariners followed by a Warrior turnover was all she wrote.

With only one game remaining in the regular season, Webber is now 16-11 overall and 10-7 in The Sun Conference with the loss while Coastal Georgia won its eighth straight game to improve to 21-6 and 14-3 and will enter the conference tournament as the No. 2 seed. Webber, meanwhile, will head into the postseason as either the No. 3 or No. 4 seed and will host their quarterfinal opponent on Tuesday, February 25, inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center.

Both the starting time and the Warriors' opponent on Tuesday will be announced over the weekend following the final game of the regular season, which for Webber will take place on the road at 2 p.m. on Saturday, February 22, at Thomas University. The first meeting between the Warriors and the Night Hawks earlier this year on January 16 was a 15-point victory (61-46) for Webber at home, and was a game in which the Warriors never trailed.
