Women’s basketball beats Thomas by 20 in 2019-20 regular-season finale

THOMASVILLE, Ga. (February 22, 2020) – The postseason-bound Webber International University women's basketball team closed out its 2019-20 regular season with some momentum, earning a 20-point victory on the road over Thomas University 84-64. Now, the No. 4-seeded Warriors will host their quarterfinal matchup during the upcoming Sun Conference Tournament on Tuesday, February 25, inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center.

Four Warriors reached double figures in scoring against Thomas as junior Eletra Graham scored 18 points on 50 percent (6-12) shooting from three. Graham has now scored at least 12 points while connecting on at least four 3-pointers in six of Webber's last eight games to close out the regular season.

Sophomore Thalia Jackson scored a career-high 14 points on 6-for-9 shooting from the field while adding seven rebounds, junior Paris Copeland had 13 points and six rebounds, and sophomore Taniya Patrick had 10 points on 4-for-7 shooting and matched Jackson with seven boards.

Three of Webber's seniors also had strong overall performances as Emmarrie Carmen added eight points and seven rebounds, Breyonna Reed had eight points and seven assists and RayGene Garner had six points and six boards.

Last but not least, junior LeAndra Franklin had three points, five boards, five assists and five steals.

Despite shooting at least 50 percent from the field in both the first and the third quarters, the Warriors only outscored the Night Hawks by a combined two points during those periods.

Instead, a big part of Webber coming out on top was the Warriors outscoring Thomas 18-11 in the second quarter and 20-9 in the fourth after holding the Night Hawks to below 30 percent shooting in both periods.

After a layup by Reed with seven seconds left in the first quarter put Webber ahead by only one point at 19-18, the Warriors never trailed the rest of the way as all nine lead changes and three ties in the game happened within the first 10 minutes of action.

Despite leading for the entire second and third quarters, the Warriors only went ahead by double digits once before the fourth quarter when two free throws by Copeland halfway through the third quarter made it a 10-point game at 48-38.

In all for the second half, the Warriors outrebounded the Night Hawks 11-2 on the offensive boards and held a 16-5 advantage in second chance points.

Webber will now enter the postseason with a strong record of 17-11 overall and 11-7 in The Sun Conference while Thomas ends its season at 4-18 and 2-16. It has been the Warriors' best season under Head Coach Grady Morrell since 2015-16, which was the last season Webber qualified for the postseason before ending the year 20-11 and 12-4 and making the TSC Tournament Championship game for the fourth year in a row.

Next up, the fourth-seeded Webber Warriors with host the fifth-seeded Florida Memorial University Lions (13-15, 8-10) during the TSC quarterfinals at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, February 25, inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center. If the Warriors continue to advance, they will head to the TSC semifinals at No. 1 Southeastern University on Friday, February 28. The championship game will then be held on one-day later on Saturday, February 29, with an automatic berth to the NAIA National Championship Tournament on the line.
