Men’s, women’s tennis fall against Warner in Crooked Lake rivalry

BABSON PARK, Fla. (February 19, 2020) – The Webber International University men's and women's tennis teams hosted their Cooked Lake rival Warner University in Sun Conference action on Wednesday, but in the end the Lady Warriors fell 5-2 while the Webber men's team fell 6-1.

COACH'S CORNER: Webber's Head Tennis Coach Otis Cutshaw said, "When you play your rival, its always a full stream of emotions and a test for every match to win. Although we did not win this time, our team showed a lot of heart in every match and we fought until the very end. Regardless of the outcome, I am proud of the effort that both teams showed today. There is still a lot of tennis to be played this season, and we will keep working hard."

Notable Women's Results:
  • The Lady Warriors earned two wins in singles with Jenna Fosdick winning 6-0, 7-5 in the No. 3 singles spot and Svenja Koenig winning 6-4, 6-1 in the No. 4 spot. Fosdick now leads the Lady Warriors with two singles win on the season.
  • In the No. 1 and No. 2 spots, Isabelle Niehoff fell 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) and Lily-Rose Rochat lost 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 respectively.
  • In the No. 5 position, Esmeralda Fernandez lost 6-0, 6-1 while in the No. 6 spot, Cheyenne Cannor had the best match of her career as a freshman so far but still fell 6-4, 6-0.
  • The closest doubles result was Fosdick and Rochat dropping No. 1 doubles by a competitive score of 6-4.

  • Webber fell to 0-5 overall and 0-4 in The Sun Conference while Warner improved to 1-5 and 1-4 with what was its first win of the season.

Notable Men's Results:
  • The lone win for Webber on the men's side was Ivan Bondarenko at No. 1 singles with a 6-1, 7-5 victory, making him the first Warrior on the men's side to reach two singles wins on the season.
  • Unfortunately, the Warriors dropped two third-set super tiebreakers in both the No. 2 and No. 3 singles positions after winning the first set. Matthew Alexander fell 2-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-5) in the second spot before Marc Schneider lost 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-6) in the three spot.
  • At No. 1 doubles, Alexander and Schneider teamed up but fell 6-2.
  • For the second match in a row, the Webber men's tennis team competed with only three players and therefore had to forfeit each of the second and third doubles spots and the fourth, fifth and sixth singles spots.

  • Webber fell to 0-5 overall and 0-4 in The Sun Conference while Warner improved to 1-6 and 1-4 with what was its first win of the season as well.

Next Up: Webber will remain at home to host its fourth straight match and third straight Sun Conference match in a row as the Warriors welcome the Bobcats of St. Thomas University to Babson Park, Florida, for a 1 p.m. start time on Saturday, February 22.
