BABSON PARK, Fla. (February 15, 2020) – The first Sun Conference series of 2020 for the No. 16 Webber International University baseball team was a three-game sweep for the Warriors as one day after winning 16-6 in eight innings on Friday night, Webber came back on Saturday to win 5-2 with a four-run bottom of the eighth inning before winning by 10 for the second time in the series with a 14-4 win in seven innings in the series finale.
"It was a good weekend of baseball for the Warriors," spoke Head Coach
Collin Martin. "Our pitching and defense did its job and it was good to see our hitters get on the barrel and push some runs across. We will enjoy this one for a minute, then we will get back to work in prepping for a tough team next weekend down in West Palm Beach."
The star of the final game for the Warriors on Saturday was
Carlo Mancillas, who finished 3-for-4 with two home runs, three runs scored and a whopping six runs batted in.
Mancillas first homered to center field to make the score 2-0 after one inning, and then in the bottom of the third, Mancillas again went yard to center as he smashed a grand slam to make the score 11-0.
In the bottom of the fourth,
Victor Florentino, who finished the game 3-for-3 with three RBI's, homered to left to make the score 13-0.
In the top of the seventh, Ave Maria scored its only four runs of the game to hold off the run rule for half an inning before Mancillas drew a bases loaded walk to score
Nick Martinez and end the game.
Starter
Bryce McDonald improved to 3-0 on the season as a freshman with six shutout innings with five hits allowed, zero walks and six strikeouts.
In the first game of the day on Saturday, Webber found itself down 2-0 in the bottom of the seventh inning before finally getting on the scoreboard thanks to an
Orlando Pena triple to right center to bring in
Matthew Wiseman, who scored from first base after walking with two outs.
Then in the bottom of the eighth inning, the Warriors rallied with four runs beginning with a two-run single to right by
Bryan Eusebio to score Mancillas and
Gene Reid II and give Webber the lead.
After starting pitcher
Hunter Morales allowed five hits and two runs over the first seven innings of the ballgame,
Rey Rodriguez (2-1) struck out two batters in the top of the eighth inning to earn his second win of the season. Then, closer
Gerig Blackman finished things off in the ninth with his fourth save of the season, working around a leadoff single with a 6-4-3 double play on the next at bat.
With the two wins, Webber improved to 11-3 overall and 3-0 in The Sun Conference as the Warriors won their sixth game in a row overall and won their fifth straight series to open up the 2020 campaign. This is the fastest the Webber baseball program has reached 10 wins in a season since 2017 when the Warriors started 12-1 by February 25. That was the year in which Webber's current run of three straight trips to the NAIA Opening Round began.
The Warriors will now travel south to West Palm Beach, Florida, for their first road series during TSC play of the season. No. 16 Webber and nationally-recognized Keiser University will square off beginning at 2 p.m. on Friday, February 21, followed by a doubleheader starting at 11 a m. on Saturday, February 22.
