Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s basketball falls against rival Warner in battle of fifth-place teams

BABSON PARK, Fla. (February 15, 2020) – After trailing by as much as 22 points in the second half, the Webber International University men's basketball team got back to within seven with under three minutes left before falling by 10, 85-75, at home against rival Warner University.

Early in the first half, Webber went up 7-0 and then led by as much as nine at 13-4 on a 3-pointer by Tommie Luke and a free throw by Jaylon Myles six and a half minutes in.

Warner then took its first lead of the game just over five and a half minutes later on a 3-pointer by Maxwell Benoit to make the score 19-18.

After back-to-back scores by Chetachukwu Oliver put Webber back up by one each time, Warner took the lead for good going up 23-22 with seven minutes left until halftime. The Royals then went up by as much as nine points in the half before another 3-pointer by Luke made it 39-33 at the break.

Early in the second half, baskets by Luke and Nicholas Toledo got the Warriors back to within four twice before the Royals went ahead 66-44 with 11 minutes left to play after a huge 23-5 run.

Then, still down by 20 at 71-51 with 8:40 left, Webber began to chip away at its deficit and got the margin down to 10 points at 73-63 on a layup by Myles with 4:40 remaining. In all, it was a 12-2 Warrior run over four minutes.

Another layup by Myles made it a seven-point game at 77-70 with 2:50 left, but back-to-back 2-for-2 trips at the free throw line by Warner with around a minute left made it a 12-point game at 83-71 and all but put it out of reach for the Warriors.

One of the biggest statistical differences in the game was that of free throws as Warner finished at 94.1 percent (16-17) while Webber shot only 59 percent (23-39) from the line, leaving much needed points on the board that could have made the game tighter at the end.

The Royals also outrebounded the Warriors 46-34 and outscored the home team 22-8 in second chance points.

While five Royals reached double figures in scoring for Warner, Webber was paced by Luke with 20 points while Myles finished with 16 points on 50 percent (7-14) shooting from the field and added six rebounds and four steals. For Myles, it was his most points in a game so far during the year of 2020.

Javonni Quince reached double digit rebounds for the sixth time on the season as a freshman by tying his career-best with 13 boards and also adding seven points. Oliver matched Quince with seven points while Kris Goettert had eight points and six boards.

Webber is now back under .500 overall on the season at 13-14 and is 6-10 in The Sun Conference while Warner improved to 18-10 and 7-9. With the win, Warner also takes sole possession of fifth place in The Sun Conference men's basketball standings while Webber drops into a three-way tie with the College of Coastal Georgia and Florida Memorial University for the final conference playoff spot.

Next up for Webber men's basketball will be Senior Night at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 20, against one those three teams tied with the Warriors for the sixth postseason spot, Coastal Georgia. During the first meeting between the Warriors and the Mariners earlier this season on January 18 in Brunswick, Georgia, Webber reached 100 points and won 100-94.
