BABSON PARK, Fla. (February 1, 2020) – For the second series in a row to start its 2020 season, the No. 16 Webber International University baseball team split its Saturday doubleheader the day after winning game one of the series. This time it was against first-year program Columbia International University as the Warriors lost game one 5-2 before coming back to win the series finale by a score of 3-1 on the Heart of Florida Baseball Field.
The winning pitcher for Webber (4-2 overall) in game two of the doubleheader was freshman
Bryce McDonald, who improved to 2-0 during two starts on the season after tossing seven great innings to open the game. McDonald allowed only three hits, one run and two walks along the way while striking out four batters.
Senior relief pitcher
Gerig Blackman closed out the final two innings without allowing a single runner to reach base and while striking out two batters to finish off the top of the eighth inning. It was the third save of the season in six games so far for Blackman.
Down 1-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning, junior
Matthew Wiseman led off with a double to left field before coming around to score on an error by the shortstop three batters later.
Webber then took the lead with what would go on to be the winning run in the bottom of the fifth inning as senior
Norberto Navarro scored from second base on a one-out single to left field by fellow-senior
Carlo Mancillas.
Mancillas (3-3) and Navarro (3-5) both finished the game with three hits while junior
Victor Florentino went 2-for-4 and scored the final run of the game in the bottom of the eighth inning after leading off with a double and then scoring on back-to-back balks by the Rams' pitcher.
In the first game of the doubleheader, Wiseman was the lone Warrior with two hits on the game as he doubled to left center in the fifth inning before homering to left center in the bottom of the ninth.
The other run batted in for the Warriors in game one came off the bat of
Orlando Pena in the bottom of the sixth inning as he singled to left center to bring in Navarro from second base with two outs.
Next up for Webber baseball is another three-game series at home on the Heart of Florida Field, this time against Florida National University starting at 6 p.m. on Friday, February 7. The two teams will then play a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m. on Saturday, February 8.
