BABSON PARK, Fla. (February 1, 2020) – Despite trailing by five points with under two minutes to go during overtime, the Webber International University men's basketball team found a way to win on Saturday inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center, edging past Johnson & Wales University 83-81 thanks to two clutch free throws by freshman
Javonni Quince with only two seconds remaining.
After
Ariel Watson connected on a 3-pointer on the very first play of overtime to put Webber up 73-70, Johnson & Wales proceeded to go on a 9-0 run to go ahead by six at 79-73 with less than three minutes remaining.
Then, the Warriors trailed by five at 81-76 with 1:45 left before another 3-pointer by Watson made it 81-79 with 1:20 to go.
Watson then added two technical shot free throws with 54 seconds on the clock to tie the game at 81-81, and after a missed three by the Wildcats with 30 seconds left, Webber got its chance.
The Warriors called a timeout with 23 seconds to go to set up the offense, and in the end Quince was fouled with only two ticks remaining to set up his game-winning free throws.
Although he only finished with six points, Quince was effective in many other areas of the game as he dished out a career-high nine assists, grabbed seven rebounds and also had three steals.
The leading scorer for Webber was
Tommie Luke, who finished with a game-high 27 points on 10-of-15 shooting from the field and 5-of-8 shooting from the free throw line. Luke also finished with six rebounds and five assists.
Malik Morrow recorded the first double-double of his season with 12 points and 11 rebounds, which was a season-high in both categories for the senior, and two other Warriors also reached double digits in scoring as Watson matched Morrow with 12 points and
Kris Goettert had 11 points.
Jaylon Myles added nine points while
Chetachukwu Oliver had seven boards.
During the first meeting between Webber and Johnson & Wales earlier this season on January 4 in North Miami, Florida, which was an 83-73 victory for the Wildcats, Webber allowed JWU to sink 17 3-pointers while shooting nearly 50 percent (49.1 percent) from the field. This time around, JWU made 14 3-pointers and shot over 50 percent (51.6 percent) from the field.
It was a great start for the visiting team on Saturday as nine minutes in, JWU jumped out to a 13-point lead at 20-7 following a 12-0 run.
Webber came all the way back to tie it at 32-32 with two minutes left before halftime following a 15-2 Warrior run; and then Webber led by double digits itself in the second half at 65-54 with 6:30 left in regulation.
After a 13-2 Wildcats' run tied the game up yet again at 67-67 with two minutes remaining in regulation, a layup by Goettert with a minute and a half left put the Warriors ahead by two. A free throw by Watson made it a three-point game at 70-67 with 52 seconds left, but 10 seconds later, the Wildcats answered with the game-tying 3-pointer with 41 seconds left in regulation.
Webber improved to 13-11 overall and 6-7 in The Sun Conference with the win as the Warriors also improved to 3-0 at home against JWU under Head Coach
Allen Corbin. The Wildcats, meanwhile, fell to 6-14 and 2-10.
Webber will now head south to close out its season series against Ave Maria University at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 6.
