AVE MARIA, Fla. (February 6, 2020) – The Webber International University men's basketball team was held to its worst offensive performance of the 2019-20 season and lost its second straight Sun Conference road game, falling 74-55 against nationally-recognized Ave Maria University on Thursday night inside the Tom Golisano Field House.
In addition to scoring a season-low 55 points, 16 points less than its previous season-low, Webber also shot a season-low 28.8 percent from the field. Webber's previous season-low in points was 71 (Nov. 1) vs. Cumberland University while its previous low in field goal percentage was 32.1 percent (Jan. 16) vs. Thomas University.
The previous two meetings between Webber and Ave Maria were a pair of three-point games coming down to the wire in favor of the Gyrenes, but this time around the Warriors trailed by double-digits for nearly the entire game.
In addition to never leading in the contest, Webber fell behind by 12 points less than eight minutes in at 21-9. The closest the Warriors got back to in the first half was to within seven points at 21-14, and then after trailing by 15 (45-30) early in the second half, Webber only got back to within single digits one time at 50-41 with a little over 12 minutes to play.
The lone Warrior in double digits in scoring was
Tommie Luke with 22 points while
Malik Morrow added nine points.
Jaylon Myles was the only other player for Webber to reach five points.
In addition to being swept by the Gyrenes for the second straight season, Webber fell to 13-12 overall on the season and 6-8 in The Sun Conference while Ave Maria improved to 17-7 and 11-3, winning its fifth straight game and sixth in its last seven games overall.
Next up for Webber men's basketball will be The Sun Conference Men's Basketball Game of the Week as the Warriors host No. 21 Southeastern University at 4 p.m. on Saturday, February 8, inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center. In the first meeting between the Warriors and the Fire back on December 5 in Lakeland, Florida, Webber outscored Southeastern 9-0 over the final two minutes of action to come away with an 83-76 victory.
