JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (December 12, 2020) –
Jaylon Myles scored 29 points for the Webber International University men's basketball team, but it came in a losing effort for the Warriors, who fell 87-72 in nonconference action at Edward Waters College on Saturday evening.
In what was the first matchup between Webber and Edward Waters since playing twice during the 2017-18 season, the Warriors scored first on a coast-to-coast layup by Myles, but from there, the Tigers dominated the first half.
Webber fell behind 14-4 after a 7-0 Tigers' run, and then fell behind by double digits at 17-6.
Just over nine minutes into the game, Webber got back to within four of the Tigers at 19-15 following a 3-pointer and then a tough, contested midrange jumper by Myles.
Unfortunately, Edward Waters proceeded to go on a huge 14-0 run to jump ahead by 18 at 33-15 with just under six minutes left before halftime. A layup by
George Davey stopped the run, and then two free throws by
Eddie Davis and a jumper by
Kris Goettert made it a 12-point game at 33-21 with less than four and a half minutes to go before the break.
Two free throws by Goettert then made it a 10-point game at 35-25 with 2:45 on the clock, and then at halftime it was still a 10-point margin at 40-30. In all for the first half, Edward Waters shot 57.7 percent from the field and 50 percent (6-12) from 3-point range.
In the second half, Webber got things started with a 3-pointer by Myles to get within seven at 40-33 before quickly falling behind by 13 points at 46-33.
The Warriors then trailed by 15 at 50-35 before getting back to within nine at 50-41 thanks to back-to-back 3-pointers by Myles with a little over 14 minutes remaining.
Those two threes were the beginning of a stretch of 10 straight points by Myles to help Webber get back to within eight at 53-45 with 12:16 on the clock after two free throws.
That was, however, the closest the Warriors would get as Edward Waters proceeded to go up by 17 points at 68-51 with under eight minutes remaining.
The Warriors got their deficit back down to 12 at 68-56 following the second 3-pointer of the game by
Deante Green, and then a four-point play by
Herman Robinson made it an 11-point margin at 71-60 with 6:05 to go.
Webber finished shooting 43.9 percent from the field, 50 percent (9-18) from three and 86.7 percent (13-15) from the free throw line, but Edward Waters was even better at 55.4 percent from the field and 51.9 percent (14-27) from three.
Myles scored his game-high 29 points, which was also his second highest scoring total of the season so far, on 9-for-16 shooting from the field, 5-for-8 shooting from three and a perfect 6-for-6 mark from the free throw line. He even added six rebounds, four assists and two steals.
Goettert finished with 10 points and five rebounds, Davis and Davey both had eight points and seven rebounds,
Rasheem Etienne had seven points and four assists, Green had six points, and Robinson had four points and three assists.
With the loss, Webber fell to 5-7 overall on the season while for Edward Waters (1-0), the game was its 2020-21 season opener.
In only three days, the Warriors of Webber and the Tigers of Edward Waters will meet up again, this time squaring off at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, December 15, in Babson Park, Florida.
