Football falls to Warner for second time this season

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. (November 7, 2020) – The Webber International University football team returned to Denision Stadium, one of its former home fields from two seasons ago, to play Warner University in the latest installment of the Lake Caloosa Clash. In the end, it was yet another game between the two rivals that came down to the final quarter to decide a winner as the Warriors unfortunately came up short by a finale score of 18-10.

It was the third straight loss for Webber (1-5 overall, 1-3 Mid-South Conference Sun Division) against Warner (2-3, 1-2), with each of the last three meetings between the two teams being decided by only one possession.

Despite the Webber defense limiting Warner to only 187 total yards of offense, the Warriors were done in by four turnovers, two of which directly resulted in touchdowns for Warner.

After the Warriors limited the Warner offense to a three-and-out on the very first possession of the game, the Webber offense turned it over on a fumble on their very first play of the game, and it was returned 44 yards for a touchdown to put the Royals up 6-0 less than a minute and a half into the game.

The Royals then went up 12-0 still with over five minutes left in the first quarter after a lengthy 80-yard, 13-play drive resulting in a rushing touchdown from three yards out.

Then in the second quarter, the Warriors were able to answer with a long drive of their own, going 75 yards in 15 plays and getting on the scoreboard thanks to a 17-yard touchdown pass from Elijah Stimmell to Javon Pride to make it 12-7 with just over five minutes left in the first half.

In the middle of the third quarter, Webber got even closer as an 11-play, 68-yard drive resulted in a 33-yard field goal by Austin Smith to make it 12-10 with 2:30 to go in the period.

Unfortunately, just how a turnover returned for a touchdown put the Warriors behind to start the game, another turnover returned for a touchdown to start the fourth quarter finished as the difference in the ballgame as Stimmell's pass on the first drive of the final quarter was intercepted and returned 82 yards to make it 18-10 still with 13 minutes left to play.

From there, new quarterback Chase Jackson came in and completed his first pass of the game for a first down before being stripped of the football himself three plays later.

Fortunately, the Webber defense held tough and forced the Royals to punt from Webber's 30-yard line, causing Webber to start its next drive from its own five-yard line with 8:35 left to play. On that drive, Jackson looked like he might just engineer the comeback as he completed three straight passes and helped Webber pick up three first downs to get to the Warner 43-yard line, but from there the offense stalled.

Thanks again to the Webber defense, Jackson and the Warriors had one more chance to try and put together a potential game-tying drive on the final possession of the game as Webber started at its own 18-yard line with only 23 seconds left, but it would just not be enough time as a hail mary pass by Jackson from Warner's 47-yard line was knocked away by the Royals' defense.

As a team, the Warriors finished with 21 first downs compared to 13 for the Royals and outgained the home team 138-58 in rushing yards, 173-129 in passing yards, and 311-187 in total yards, but in the end, Webber was only 4-of-13 on third down while Warner was 7-of-14.

Individually, Joseph Burton and Colton Cormier both finished with 10 total tackles on the game while Burton added an interception and Cormier also added five tackles for loss and an incredible 3.5 sacks in the game. Johnny Hernandez finished with seven tackles as well.

Offensively, Stimmell finished 10-for-21 passing for 110 yards with one touchdown while Jackson was 6-for-12 for 63 yards while also adding 36 rushing yards on three attempts.

Tremon Bright led the Warriors' rushing attack with a career-high 73 yards on 25 carries, and the leading wide receiver for Webber was Pride with six catches for 74 yards and a touchdown while Frederick Curry Jr. added four catches for 64 yards.

Next up, Webber's 2020 Senior Day will now take place at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, November 14, against Ave Maria University on the Warrior Turf Field.
