Football comes up short against Ave Maria on Senior Day

BABSON PARK, Fla. (November 14, 2020) – The Webber International University football team fell 26-14 to the Gyrenes of Ave Maria University during the Warriors' Senior Day on Saturday on the Warrior Turf Field.

It was Senior Day for No. 5 Tye Bailey, No. 9 Johnny Hernandez, No. 11 Lee Bendolph III, No. 15 Marcus Mannerstedt, No. 18 Chaz Feder, No. 19 Isaiah Trexler, No. 24 Christopher Hilaire, No. 32 Alexander Munson, No. 43 Tariq Kamau and No. 50 Danterius Ghant.

Webber (1-6 overall, 1-4 Mid-South Conference Sun Division) found itself behind 14-0 early in the second quarter before finally getting on the scoreboard with 5:50 left before halftime when a nine-yard pass from Chase Jackson to Javon Pride capped a quick six-play, 75-yard drive and cut the Warriors' deficit in half.

football-senior-day-2020From there, however, Ave Maria (3-3, 2-2) responded with 12 straight points, including a safety midway through the third quarter, to lead it by 19 at 26-7.

A second touchdown pass by Jackson, this time a two-yard toss to Frederick Curry Jr., made it 26-14 with only five minutes left.

Webber is also now 7-3 all-time against Ave Maria after being shutout 13-0 by the Gyrenes last season. After being held to under 175 yards of offense while going 4-for-16 on third down last year, the Warriors finished with 220 total yards this time around and were 3-for-10 on third down.

football-senior-day-2020Although it was Senior Day, it was junior running back Tremon Bright who was the star of the day offensively for the Warriors, finishing with a career-high 158 rushing yards on 15 attempts, good for an average of 10.5 yards per touch. Bright had 146 of his yards in the first half alone before Webber had to begin throwing the ball more down multiple scores in the second half.

Defensively, reigning MSC Sun Division Defensive Player of the Week Colton Cormier again made his presence felt all around the field, finishing with 13 total tackles and 11 solo tackles.

Jaren Muse, Danterius Ghant and David Lamey each added six tackles as well while Ghant and Lamey both add two tackles for loss. Additionally, Ghant and Jimmie Harper both finished with one sack, and Jamon Jones had a forced fumble and recorded his third interception of the season.

Next up, Webber's final game of the season will see the Warriors travel to play at St. Thomas University at 12 p.m. on Saturday, November 21, in Miami Gardens, Florida. During St. Thomas' inaugural season last year, the Warriors defeated the Bobcats by a score of 31-7 during what was the first ever varsity football game played on the Warrior Turf Field.
