BABSON PARK, Fla. (November 19, 2020) – The first Sun Conference game of the 2020-21 season for the Webber International University men's basketball team resulted in a close 69-64 defeat at home for the Warriors against Thomas University.
Webber was led in scoring by
Rasheem Etienne with 14 points on 6-for-11 shooting from the field. Etienne also added five rebounds, four assists and three steals.
Jaylon Myles added 11 points while
Terrance Lakes had 10.
Loro Natana had nine points to go along with eight rebounds,
Eddie Davis had eight points and seven boards,
Kris Goettert has six points and nine rebounds, and
Justin Boyd also had six points.
The Warriors struggled from the field in the first half, shooting only 30 percent (9-30) overall and only 12.50 percent (1-8) from 3-point range.
In the end, Webber finished shooting only 17.6 percent (3-17) from three and was also only 65.2 percent (15-23) from the free throw line while Thomas shot over 47 percent from the field, shot 35.7 percent (5-14) from three, and was 84.2 percent (16-19) from the free throw line.
After Webber led by eight points at 13-5 four and a half minutes into the game, Thomas came back to tie it at 18-18 with just under eight minutes left before halftime.
The Night Hawks then went ahead by as much at 10 points at 33-23 with a minute and a half left before the break, but the Warriors got back to within two at 39-37 on a pair of free throws by Natana with just under 17 minutes left to play.
A layup by Lakes with 8:40 left again made it a two-point game at 49-47, but from their Thomas went on a game-deciding 15-0 run to lead it by 17 at 64-47 with only four minutes left.
The Warriors got the deficit back to within single digits in the final minute of action, but did not have enough time left to try and complete the comeback.
Webber fell to 2-4 overall and 0-1 in The Sun Conference while Thomas picked up its first win of the year at 1-4 and 1-1.
Next up for Webber will be a big matchup across the lake as the Warriors play at rival Warner University starting at 4 p.m. on Saturday, November 21.
