LAKE WALES, Fla. (November 21, 2020) – Despite having four players finish in double figures in scoring, the Webber International University men's basketball team lost a hard-fought battle against its Crooked Lake rival Warner University on Saturday, falling by a final score of 79-72 inside the Turner Athletic Center.
Jaylon Myles led Webber (2-5 overall, 0-2 The Sun Conference) with 19 points on three 3-pointers while
Kris Goettert was next with 18 points on 8-for-11 shooting from the field.
Justin Boyd had 14 points on 3-for-5 shooting from three, and
Eddie Davis reached 10 points for the second time so far this season. Warner (4-2, 2-2), however, finished with five players in double figures in scoring.
Goettert and
Loro Natana led the Warriors on the glass with seven rebounds each while
Terrance Lakes dished out seven assists. Lakes and
Rasheem Etienne also both finished with three steals.

In the second half, Webber shot 48.15 percent (13-27) from the field and was 60 percent (3-5) from three, but could not stop the Royals from shooting even better at 56.25 percent (18-32) overall and 62.50 percent (5-8) from three.
In all, the game featured four ties and 10 lead changes while both teams held a lead by as much as 10 points at one point.
It was the Warriors who led by 10 early on at 14-4 only seven minutes into the game, and then led 16-6 with 12:17 left in the first half.
Then, with the two teams tied at 49-49 with 13 minutes left to play, Warner hit a 3-pointer and would never relinquish the lead, going ahead by seven at 60-53 with 10 and a half minutes still left to play.

Webber got back to within two at 62-60 on a layup by Goettert with 6:18 left, but then six straight points by the Royals made it an eight-point game at 68-60 with under five minutes remaining.
Warner then went up by 10 at 72-62 with 3:21 on the clock. Webber got the deficit back down to four at 72-68 with two minutes to go, but would get no closer as five more points by the Royals made it nine-point margin at 77-68 with 1:25 left.
A 3-pointer by Myles and a free throw by Etienne made it 77-72 with 31 seconds to go before a costly turnover in the final 10 seconds led to a fast break dunk by Warner to put it away.
Webber's Head Coach,
Gabriel Rutledge, said after the game, "I thought our guys played extremely hard on both ends of the floor today. There were three to four minutes in the second half where we didn't play our best basketball, and that changed the game in Warner's favor. We will continue to work on being great at the little things and building a great program. Go Warriors."
The Warriors will return to nonconference action for their next game as Webber hosts Florida National University at 4 p.m. on Saturday, November 28, inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center.
