Warriors return to action with home loss against No. 9 Keiser

BABSON PARK, Fla. (October 31, 2020) – The Webber International University football team returned to the field for the first time in three weeks on Saturday, but it was a rough outing all-around for the Warriors in a 42-0 loss against a very tough Keiser University team that is ranked No. 9 in the NAIA.

Keiser scored on each of its first three possessions of the game and on four of its first five possessions overall.

At halftime, it was 28-0 in favor of the Seahawks, who had 20 first downs compared to two for the Warriors, and had outgained Webber 181-19 in yards on the ground and 274-54 in total yards. Additionally, Keiser was 6-for-8 on third down and 4-for-4 in the red zone in the first half while Webber was 0-for-6 on third down over the opening 30 minutes.

football-vs-keiser-103120By the end of the game, Keiser had 36 first downs to Webber's seven, had 348 rushing yards, and had 529 total yards of offense.

Webber's best drive of the game came on the opening possession of the second half when the Warriors put together a 10-play, 51-yard drive that took Webber from its own 38-yard line to the Keiser 11-yard line before stalling on fourth down.

Individually for Webber, quarterback Cody Braden was 9-for-14 passing for 75 yards, Tremon Bright rushed eight times for 19 yards, Javon Pride caught 2 passes for 42 yards, and Freddie Hughley had five catches for 36 yards.

football-vs-keiser-103120Defensively, Devonte Harris had 14 total tackles, eight solo tackles, and two tackles for loss. Next was Trent Peacock with 11 tackles, seven solo tackles, one tackle for loss and a fumble recovery. Colton Cormier also reached double digits in tackles with 10 while Christopher L. Williams II added nine tackles and an interception at the end of the first half, and Alondre Smith had eight total tackles and added a forced fumble.

Senior punter Joe Ebel punted eight times for an average of 40.2 yards per punt, including a long of 52 yards. He put two punts inside the Keiser 20-yard line, had one touchback, and had two punts of over 50 yards.

With the loss, Webber fell to 1-4 overall and 1-2 in the Mid-South Conference Sun Division while Keiser improved to 6-0 and 4-0. It was the final road game of the regular season for Keiser, which also won its 15th straight regular-season game and has now outscored its opponents 297-45 with three shutouts on the season.

Next up for Webber will be its second meeting so far this season with rival Warner University as this time around, the Warriors and the Royals will meet inside Denison Stadium on Saturday, November 7, at 1:30 p.m.
