MOUNT VERNON, Ga. (October 30, 2020) – The first of back-to-back nonconfernece road games in the state of Georgia for the Webber International University men's basketball team finished with a low-scoring 64-53 loss for the Warriors at Brewton-Parker College. It was the first game between the two teams since the 2009-10 season.
Both teams struggled to score early on as Webber (0-2) led by a close score of 5-4 five minutes in and then led 9-7 10 minutes in.
The Warriors then doubled up the Barons to lead it 14-7 after a 3-pointer by
Justin Boyd, but from there, Brewton-Parker (1-0) came back to tie it at 22-22 and then outscored Webber 8-3 over the final two minutes of the first half to lead it 30-25 at the break.
In the second half, Brewton-Parker never trailed despite the Warriors staying in striking distance throughout.
After the Barons took a nine-point lead at 44-35, Webber got back to within three at 44-41. Unfortunately, Brewton-Parker answered back with eight straight points to go up by 11 at 52-41.
The Warriors tried to chip away at the deficit and got back to within five at 54-49 with four minutes left to play after two free throws by
Jaylon Myles.
Webber then got to within two at 55-53 on a layup by
Terrance Lakes, but would get no closer as the Barons finished off the game on a 9-0 run.
"It was a tough loss tonight," spoke Webber's Head Men's Basketball Coach
Gabriel Rutledge. "I thought the guys showed tremendous mental toughness and heart to continue to fight through a slow offensive night. Our defensive effort was a lot better, and the guys are starting to buy in on the defensive end. We have a strong group of guys who are learning to fight through adversity and win. Go Warriors."
Next up, Webber's stretch of three straight road games to open the new 2020-21 season will conclude with a 4 p.m. tipoff on Saturday, October 31, at Point University in West Point, Georgia. The Skyhawks are currently 1-0 on their season following a 98-83 victory over Johnson University in their season opener on Monday.
