BABSON PARK, Fla. (October 3, 2020) – The Webber International University women's soccer team earned its first win in The Sun Conference of the season as the Warriors defeated the Lions of Florida Memorial University by a very close score of 1-0 on Saturday on the Warrior Turf Field.
Webber scored the lone goal of the match in the 34th minute as
Alyssa Rivera passed to
Savannah Heggen, who scored into the top left-hand corner. It was the first career goal for the sophomore from Tampa, Florida, while the assist for Rivera, a junior from Hudson, Florida, was the first of her career.
Webber certainly controlled the action for the majority of the contest, firing double-digit shot attempts in each half while holding Florida Memorial to five or fewer attempts in each half.
Additionally, the Warriors' defense did not allow the Lions to take a single shot on goal, which helped goalkeeper
Natalie Bartek, a sophomore from Jacksonville, Florida, earn her first career shutout.
Leading the Warriors in shot attempts was
Leah Borders with seven, five of which were on goal. Next was
Sophia Kenny, Heggen and Rivera each with three shots while
Deborah Guillen,
Charlee Lutton and
Harlie Ford each added two.
With the win, Webber improved to 2-3 overall and 1-3 in The Sun Conference and is now 10-0-1 all-time against Florida Memorial, which fell to 0-4 both overall and in the conference.
Head Coach
Brian Fallon spoke after the match saying, "It was a battle of resilience versus tenacity, and today resilience won out. I'm really proud of our team and the way they stayed so disciplined throughout the whole game. I would love to score more goals sure, but sometimes you just have to focus on what you get and take that beautiful home win."
Next up for the Warriors will be a break from conference action as Webber travels to Georgia on Wednesday, October 2, to play at Brewton-Parker College at 2 p.m.
