BABSON PARK, Fla. (October 28, 2020) – The Webber International University women's soccer team returned to the field for the first time in 11 days, but it was a rough outing offensively for the Warriors, who fell by a score of 1-0 at home against their Crooked Lake rival Warner University.
It was the second one-goal loss of the season for Webber against Warner, who earned the season sweep over the Warriors.
Despite the two teams combining for only three total shots in the first half, that is where the lone goal of the match came as Warner's Brooke Boccuzzo put one into the back of the net off the pass from Sara Machado in the 31st minute.
The Warriors' lone shot in the first half came only 30 seconds in when senior
Sarah Thigpen fired wide.
In the second half, Webber's sophomore goalkeeper
Natalie Bartek made five saves en route to finishing with six total saves to try and give the Warrior offense a fighting chance.
Despite Webber finishing the match without a shot on goal, the final 15 minutes featured four well-placed corner kicks by junior
Emilie Velez, one of which hit the top of the crossbar.
Velez's corner kick in the 76th minute ended with a shot by Thigpen being blocked, and then in the 82nd minute, Webber's final shot attempt of the match came wide by senior
Leah Borders trying to break away from her defender.
Head Coach
Brian Fallon said, "Hats off to Warner. It was a great game, and both teams came in focused and ready to execute. We certainly have things we need to work on, and we will push on into our tough week coming up."
With the loss, Webber fell to 3-6-1 overall and 1-6 in The Sun Conference while Warner improved to above .500 overall at 5-4 and is now 2-4 in conference matches with both of its wins in conference play this season coming against the Warriors.
Next up will be Webber's Senior Day against the University of South Carolina Beaufort. The festivities will begin at 2:30 p.m. on Monday, November 2, on the Warrior Grass Field.
