Men’s soccer falls after second-half comeback by Ave Maria

AVE MARIA, Fla. (October 28, 2020) – Despite holding a 1-0 lead at halftime, the Webber International University men's soccer team could not hold on and instead lost to Ave Maria University by a final score of 2-1 on the road on Wednesday night.

Despite the result, it was Webber who scored first less than 10 minutes into the match on the third goal of the season by freshman Jay Skelcher-Maxwell, and it was the Warriors who more than doubled up the Gyrenes in shots 21-10. Webber also finished with 12 shots on goal compared to seven for Ave Maria.

Skelcher-Maxwell led Webber with three shots while Daniel Perez, Eric Longhorn and Sebastian Lago each had two shots on goal.

Unfortunately, a pair of goals in the 59th and 72nd minutes by Ave Maria's Nikola Vinski was enough to give the victory to the Gyrenes.

It was the second time this season the winner between Webber and Ave Maria had each of its goals scored by the same player. In the first meeting earlier this season between the two teams, senior David Negrin Ruiz scored all three Warrior goals to net his first career hat trick en route to being named not only The Sun Conference Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week, but also the NAIA National Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week.

With the loss on Wednesday, Webber fell to 4-7 overall and 3-6 in The Sun Conference while Ave Maria improved to 3-6 and 1-5.

Head Coach Neil Cockburn said, "The boys played extremely well, however, Ave Maria just wanted it more than us along with some great coaching from Coach Eddie."

Next up for the Warriors will be their 2020 regular-season finale and Senior Day as Webber hosts Crooked Lake rival Warner University at 9 a.m. on the morning of Saturday, October 31. The Warriors will be looking to complete the season sweep over the Royals after winning 2-0 on the road at Warner back at the beginning of the month on October 3.
