Women’s volleyball earns TSC sweep over St. Thomas

BABSON PARK, Fla. (September 28, 2019) – The Webber International University women's volleyball team swept its opponent for the second straight match at home and earned its first Sun Conference win at home of the season as the Warriors defeated St. Thomas University 3-0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-20) on Saturday inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center.

With the win, Webber got back to .500 overall on the season at 6-6 and improved to 2-3 in The Sun Conference while St. Thomas fell to 5-10 overall and 2-4 in conference matches.

The Warriors were paced by Laura Embry's second double-double of the season as she recorded 15 assists and 10 digs. Brianda Valdez also added 10 assists.

Kalameli Matautia led Webber with 12 kills and was followed by Embry, Salla Rautiainen, Madelyn Glouner and Svenja Koenig each with five kills. Embry actually went on a finish with a season-high .417 attack percentage while Valdez finished with four kills and a .375 attack percentage.

A key difference in the match was that of services aces with the Warriors accumulating nine aces compared to five for St. Thomas. Samantha Davila accounted for five of those aces while Embry and Koenig each had two.

"Our Warriors are continuing to improve through adversity," spoke Head Coach Gretchen Hand. "Athletes are growing into their leadership roles. Laura Embry is running great offensive play, Madelyn Glouner put up a huge block, and Kalameli Matautia continues to put the ball down with authority. I am proud of our Warriors, and we're not done yet."

Webber took control in the first set when a 7-0 run featuring four service aces by Davila, a kill by Koenig and two Bobcats' attack errors made it 18-10 Warriors.

In the second set, three straight kills by Valdez, Embry and Matautia made it a 21-16 Warrior advantage before St. Thomas got back to within three at 22-19. From there, Webber won the set on another kill by Embry followed by back-to-back attack errors by the Bobcats' Sofia Adorno.

The final set was close until a kill by Matautia, a kill by Davila and an ace by Embry made it 22-17 Warriors. After St. Thomas reached the 20-point mark in a set for the first time all match, Webber ended it on a ball handling error by the Bobcats followed by a kill from Glouner.

It was the fifth win in a row for the Warriors over the Bobcats dating back to the 2017 season when Webber defeated St. Thomas in the TSC Tournament Championship match. It was also the second sweep in a row for Webber over St. Thomas.

Next up, Webber will remain at home to host the College of Coastal Georgia in more TSC action at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, October 2.
