Women’s volleyball falls against TSC preseason favorite Coastal Georgia

BABSON PARK, Fla. (October 2, 2019) – The Webber International University women's volleyball team fell in three sets against the College of Coastal Georgia, dropping it 3-0 (25-15, 25-20. 25-19) during the Warriors' Dig Pink Match on Wednesday night inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center.

Kalameli Matautia, the reigning Sun Conference Attacker of the Week, finished with nine kills and eight digs and was followed by Samantha Davila and Svenja Koenig each with seven kills.

Brianda Valdez added 15 assists while Laura Embry had 14 assists and six digs, and Madelyn Glouner had seven digs.

Additionally, Embry and Glouner both had four kills with an attack percentage over .300.

Despite allowing the Mariners to hit .344 percent for the match, Webber was competitive early on in each set.

In the opening set, a kill by Matautia tied the match at 9-9 before a 5-0 CCG run made it 14-9 and then another 5-0 spurt made it 22-13.

In the second set, another 5-0 run for CCG turned a 7-7 tie into a 12-7 Mariners' advantage. Then, with the Warriors trailing 17-11 in the frame, kills by Koenig got the Warriors back to within two twice at 19-17 and then again at 21-19. Unfortunately, back-to-back kills by Addie Pedraza made it 23-19, and then a kill by Matautia to make it 23-20 was the last point of the set for the Warriors.

In the final set, three straight kills by Davila tied it again early on at 10-10, but a 5-1 run for CCG made it 15-11. Then, down 16-12, Webber answered with a 5-1 run of its own to tie it at 17-17, but with the two teams tied at 18-18, CCG won it with a 7-1 run.

With the loss, Webber fell back below .500 overall at 6-7 and dropped to 2-4 in The Sun Conference. Coastal Georgia, meanwhile, the preseason favorite according to the TSC Coaches' Poll, improved to 12-5 overall and 5-1 in the league.

Next up, Webber will hit the road for a TSC matchup at Ave Maria University at 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 5, before the Warriors battle Keiser University twice during the following week.
