Women’s soccer blanked by No. 1 Keiser

BABSON PARK, Fla. (September 28, 2019) – The Webber International University women's soccer team hosted the No. 1 team in all of the NAIA, Keiser University, on Saturday at Warrior Field. In the end, the Warriors would go on to lose by a score of 7-0 despite putting an emphasis on the defensive side of the ball.

Freshman goalkeeper Cameron Laine helped keep the match scoreless until more than halfway through the opening 45 minutes. Laine was effective overall in the first half with the two first-half goals against her coming within a nine-minute span, the first of which came after Laine initially saved a shot but could not hold on to the rebound, and the second of which came on a penalty kick.

Unfortunately, the top-ranked Seahawks then started off the second half with two goals in the first 8:07 of the period and then added three more in a seven-minute span starting in the 72nd minute.

Laine would go on to finished with an outstanding 20 saves but six goals allowed in 77 minutes.

After that, fellow-freshman Natalie Bartek finished off the final 13 minutes allowing only one goal while making three saves.

Head Women's Soccer Coach Brian Fallon said, "Clearly Keiser is the team to beat this year and hats off to them, they earned the win. From our perspective, we worked extremely hard but made minor mistakes that cost us some key opportunities to score."

In the first half offensively for Webber, the Warriors were held to a grand total of zero shot attempts compared to 28 shots for Keiser. The Seahawks then added 30 attempts in the second half for a grand total of 58, 30 of which were on goal.

Shots for the Warriors came from sophomore Hannah Vigotty high in the 52nd minute and from junior Leah Borders high 10 minutes later.

For Keiser, Matilda Ovenberger recorded the hat trick with three goals while Josefine Troneby and Sophie Franck each recorded two assists.

The Warriors fell to 3-2-1 overall and 0-2 in The Sun Conference while Keiser improved to 8-1 and 1-0 with what was its sixth straight win and fourth straight shutout.

"The idea is that though these are the games you want to play in because they make you better," added Fallon. "The good thing about this team is that they are already preparing for the next battle on Wednesday and we are looking for results to come out of that match based on the preparation we do early next week."

Next up, the Warriors will travel to Florida Memorial University in Miami Gardens, Florida, for a 4 p.m. kickoff on Wednesday, October 2. Following that, Webber will host its Crooked Lake rival, Warner University, on Saturday, October 5, at 9 a.m. on the new Warrior Turf Field on campus in what is sure to be a special day for all Warrior fans.
