MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (October 2, 2019) – The Webber International University women's soccer team won for the first time in Sun Conference play during the current 2019 season as the Warriors shutout Florida Memorial University 3-0 on Wednesday afternoon.
After both teams combined for only three shots in the first half, Webber picked it up a little bit in the second half with six shots coming in the first 12 minutes of the frame, half of which came from
Leah Borders.
However, it still took until the 80th minute for the Warriors to capitalize and get on the scoreboard when Borders assisted on the team-leading sixth goal of the season by
Megan Warner.
It was the team-leading third assist of the year by Borders, who also went on to finish with a match-high four shots.
After Warner's goal, the floodgates opened up a little bit as
Kelcee Jackson scored a minute later and then added her second goal of the match in the final minute. Jackson, a freshman from Jacksonville, Florida, now has four goals on the year.
Another freshman,
Cameron Laine, played all 90 minutes in the goal and recorded the first solo shutout of her career.
In all, the Warriors' defense held FMU to only three shots for the match and only one shot on goal while the Warriors outshot the Lions 15-1 in the second half.
The three late goals for Webber came in stark contrast to last season, Head Coach
Brian Fallon's first with the team, when the Warriors put up seven goals and cruised to a 5-0 lead at halftime. It was much closer this time around as Webber needed to stay focused and get it together late to put one in the back of the net.
"It was not the prettiest win we've had all year, but it was a win nonetheless," said Fallon. "I think one of the key things that came out of this is how our freshman players are really adding to the wins; they sometimes just seem to bring that spark you need at the right time.
Kelcee Jackson's two goals and almost another off the header stood out, but there were many other players that contributed to this win. Now we move into preparations with the second half of the battle of Crooked Lake this Saturday. I'm sure the team will be ready; it's just going to take work."
With the win, Webber improves to 4-2-1 overall and 1-2 in The Sun Conference while FMU fell to 0-9 and 0-3. Additionally, the Warriors are now 8-0-1 all-time against the Lions dating back to 2009.
Next up, Webber will host Warner University, on Saturday, October 5, at 9 a.m. on the Warrior Grass Field. In the first meeting between the two teams this season back on September 10, Webber was victorious by a score of 3-2 in overtime after the winning goal by
Angelina Conde.
