BABSON PARK, Fla. (September 28, 2019) – In what was the start of a four-match home stand for the Warriors, sophomore
Mateo Fernandez Sassoni scored in the 104th minute to send the Webber International University men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over SCAD Savannah on Saturday afternoon at Warrior Field. It was good for the Warriors' first Sun Conference victory of the 2019 season.
The golden goal came three minutes and 16 seconds into the second overtime period to be exact. After a shot by
Quam Salami on a breakaway opportunity hit off the back post,
David Negrin Ruiz collected the loose ball and made a gorgeous pass to Fernandez Sassoni for the winner.
Head Men's Soccer Coach
Neil Cockburn said, "I am very proud of the boys to come back from a tough defeat against Southeastern only three days ago to get the double overtime win today. Both teams fought hard, and it could have gone either way, but the boys put it in fifth gear with their fitness thanks to Coach
Chris Slavin. The boys showed a lot of character and I am very happy with the win."
It was the first goal of the season for Fernandez Sassoni and was the second assist for Negrin Ruiz. Negrin Ruiz (8) and Fernandez Sassoni (7) now rank first and second on the Warriors in points so far in 2019.
In the first overtime period, the Warriors outshot the Bees 5-2 and had great chances to win it late with a shot by
Bruno Flores blocked in the 97th minute, back-to-back shots by
Bryan Mejia blocked and Negrin Ruiz saved in the 98th minute, a header by
Chris Lyon saved in the 99th minute, and a shot by Fernandez Sassoni blocked away with less than 20 seconds remaining.
In the end, Negrin Ruiz finished with a match-high six shot attempts, half of which were on goal, while Fernandez Sassoni added five total shots, two of which were on goal, and Flores finished with three attempts.
The match was brutally close with the Bees outshooting the Warriors 24-23 overall but the Warriors putting two more shots on goal than SCAD, 7-5. SCAD also won the saves battle by one, 6-5, while Webber had one more corner kick opportunity at 10-9.
In goal, freshman
Felipe Freiria played the entire match and made five saves to earn what was his third shutout of the year so far.
Additionally, Freiria improved his record in the goal to 6-2 on the year, the same record Webber sits at overall along with a 1-1 conference mark. SCAD Savannah, meanwhile, fell to 3-3 overall and 1-1 in the TSC.
Next up, Webber men's soccer will take a break from TSC action to host the University of the Virgin Islands in a nonconference match at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, October 2, at Warrior Field. The Warriors were originally scheduled to host Virgin Islands back on August 29, but that match was canceled due to Hurricane Dorian.
