Men’s soccer shuts out Virgin Islands; improves to 7-2

BABSON PARK, Fla. (October 2, 2019) – In what was its final nonconference match of the 2019 season, the Webber International University men's soccer team shutout the University of the Virgin Islands by a score of 3-0 on Warrior Field.

Despite being outshot 14-5 throughout the first 43 minutes of the match, Webber finally converted with a goal with less than two minutes remaining in the first half when Daichi Arahara dribbled down the sideline and found David Negrin Ruiz for his team-leading fourth goal of the season.

Then, less than a minute into the second half, Webber doubled up its advantage as Negrin Ruiz delivered a beautiful cross into the box, where it found the head of Elies Sebbouh for goal number two on the match. It was the second goal of the season so far for Sebbouh and was Negrin Ruiz's third assist of the year.

Eight minutes later, the Warriors kept it going on the first career goal by Quam Salami, who took the ball into the box and shot past the keeper after the third assist of the season by Ivan Bonanken.

In all, the three goals came in less than a 10-and-a-half-minute span.

Despite being outshot 15-6 in the first half, the Warriors turned it around in the second half to outshoot UVI 10-5 over the final 45 minutes. Overall, the Warriors also finished with seven shots on goal compared to four for UVI and had six corner kicks compared to only one for the road team.

Quam Salami finished with a team-high five shots while Nikita Muniz and Rodrigo Flores Iraheta each had two.

Sophomore goalkeeper Fabricio Verdun earned the win in what was his first start of the season. The shutout, Verdun's first of the year, was also the fourth of the year for Webber men's soccer as a whole.

Webber's current record of 7-2 is its best start to a season since the Warriors were 7-1 in 2013.

Next up, Webber will conclude its current four-match home stand with two Sun Conference matches. The Warriors will host Johnson & Wales University at 2 p.m. on Sunday, October 6, before battling Thomas University at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, October 9.
