Women’s soccer drops conference opener at Thomas

THOMASVILLE, Ga. (September 25, 2019) – After an undefeated nonconference portion of its 2019 season so far, the Webber International University women's soccer team started off the Sun Conference part of its schedule on the wrong foot with a 3-0 loss on the road at Thomas University on Wednesday afternoon at the TU Soccer Complex.

With Webber already trailing 1-0 at halftime despite six saves and a good starting performance from goalkeeper Cameron Laine, Thomas amped up the defensive pressure in the second half and held the Warriors to only one shot attempt and zero corner kicks.

The lone attempt for the Warriors in the second half came wide off the foot of Hannah Vigotty with the Warriors trailing 2-0 in the 55th minute.

With six of Webber's seven shot attempts coming in the first half, Angelina Conde led the way with three total attempts, two of which were on goal, while Leah Borders added two shots and Kelcee Jackson had the Warriors' other attempt.

Despite not being able to convert, the Warriors had two good opportunities to score in the first half. Conde fired a shot that needing saving 28 minutes into the match before firing a shot wide two and a half minutes later. Then, back-to-back shots by Jackson and Borders were saved away in the 40th and 41st minutes, respectively, to help the Night Hawks' goalkeeper, Lucy Apps, preserve the shutout.

Head Coach Brian Fallon said, "It really was a hard fought battle, and I'm very proud of the girls in the sense that we accomplished so many of the things we wanted to see, but yet we did fall short in the final results. I know this team still has a personal believe that easily could be the first round of a battle for third or fourth place in the conference."

With its first loss of the season, Webber fell to 3-1-1 overall on the season and 0-1 in The Sun Conference while Thomas improved to 5-4 overall and 1-0 in conference.

It will not get any easier for the Warriors this weekend as Webber's hosts the No. 1 team in all of the NAIA, Keiser University, at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 28.
