Women’s soccer ties Florida College in home opener

BABSON PARK, Fla. (September 23, 2019) – In what both began and ended as a battle of two undefeated NAIA women's soccer teams, Webber International University held two first-half leads before ultimately tying Florida College 2-2 on Monday during the Warriors' 2019 home opener at Warrior Field.

With the tie, both teams stay undefeated as Webber moved to 3-0-1 overall and Florida College moved to 5-0-1.

Webber got off to a great start as the first goal of the match came less than six minutes in when Hannah Vigotty delivered a free kick to Megan Warner, who converted for her fifth goal of the season already in four matches. It was Vigotty's second assist of the year so far.

Then, after a match-tying goal on a nice run up the middle by Florida College only four minutes later, it took until the 36th minute for the Warriors to take their second lead of the match on a goal by Leah Borders, assisted by Warner. It was the third goal of the early-part of the season by Borders and was the second assist by Warner, who now has 12 points this year between her last three matches.

Goalkeeper Natalie Bartek earned the start for Webber and finished with three saves on six shot attempts for the Falcons in the first half.

However, despite the two one-goal leads by the Warriors in the first half, Florida College found the answer again in the second half, out-possessing Webber for the majority of the second half and outshooting the home team 9-3 in the period. The aggressive play by the Falcons paid off in the 51st minute as Florida College converted on a penalty kick against new goalkeeper Cameron Laine (1-0-1) for the equalizer.

Despite the goal, Laine finished with seven saves throughout the second half and both overtime periods, including two big ones during the first overtime.

For the Falcons, Michaela Nicholson accounted for both of Florida College's goals and finished with 13 shots, 10 of which were on goal. For the Warriors, Warner led the way with four shots, all of which were on goal.

The match with Florida College also served as the final tune-up for Webber before the Warriors begin official Sun Conference play in two days. On Wednesday, September 25, the Warriors will travel to battle Thomas University at 1 p.m. in Thomasville, Georgia.

"It was certainly not our best game, but it was certainly not our worst as well," said Head Coach Brian Fallon. "The game is ever-evolving, and one of the things we have focused on this year is being easily agile to adapt. This is something that I believe was demonstrated today and in games like this. The tie might have actually come at a good time to wake us up for the upcoming game on Wednesday at Thomas."
