WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. (SEPTEMBER 19, 2019) – The Webber International University football team traveled to Williamsburg, Kentucky, to play the 14th-ranked team in the NAIA, the University of the Cumberlands (Ky.), in an installment of Thursday night football. The Warriors got off to a slow start in the first half and never recovered, falling 45-14.
The normally good Webber defense allowed two touchdowns from over 30 yards out in the first quarter and gave up two more one-yard scores in the second quarter to send the Warriors into halftime trailing 28-0.
After another touchdown for the Patriots less than two minutes into the third quarter, Webber finally got on the scoreboard with 8:27 left in the frame on a six-yard touchdown pass from quarterback
Brycen Lee to tight end
Bryce Briggs-Pierre for his first catch of the season. The big play of the drive for the Warriors was a big 50-yard pass from Lee to
Jeremiah Lucas to get Webber down to the Patriots' 11-yard line.
After its first touchdown, Webber added the two-point conversion on a pass from Lee to wide receiver
Timothy Miller to make the score 35-8.
UC added a second rushing touchdown from Marquez Trigg in the third quarter and started the fourth quarter with a field goal to make it 45-8. In all, the Warrior defense allowed the Patriots to put up 14 points over each of the first three quarters.
The Warriors then made it 45-14 on a run-yard rushing score by Lee with only 4:19 left to play.
In the end, Lee, who was making his first appearance as a Warrior, finished 22-for-29 passing with 282 yards as the Warriors actually out-passed the Patriots by nearly 100 yards, 292-194. The 282 passing yards for Lee were the most by any Webber quarterback so far this season. However, Webber was outrushed 202 to only 16 in yards on the ground, and was held to 0-for-9 on third down.
On a positive note, Webber was 2-for-2 in the red zone.
In addition to his catch on Webber's two-point conversion in the third quarter, Miller hauled in a season-high nine catches for 59 yards while
Davonte Williams caught four passes for a season-high 80 receiving yards and Lucas had five catches for 76 yards.
With the loss, Webber fell to 1-2 overall so far in 2019 while Cumberlands, which is a member of the Mid-South Conference Bluegrass Division, moved to 2-0.
Next up, Webber will have another off week before looking to play at home on its new Warrior Turf Field for the first time. The matchup is set with St. Thomas University at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 5, as the Warriors look to open up MSC Sun Division play on a positive note against a first-year football program.
