Webber football thrashes St. Thomas 31-7 in first game played on new Warrior Turf Field

BABSON PARK, Fla. (October 5, 2019) – The Webber International University football team played its first official home varsity football game on its new Warrior Turf Field on Saturday, and the Warriors' effort ended in triumphant fashion as Webber was victorious, 31-7, over St. Thomas University.

It was also the 2019 Mid-South Conference Sun Division opener for both teams as Webber improved to 2-2 overall and 1-0 in the division while St. Thomas, which is in its first season of varsity football competition, fell to 1-3 and 0-1.

Webber's Head Football Coach Kelly Scott said, "That was a nice win. We have to correct the mental mistakes, but it was a good way to introduce the new Warrior Field."

Before kickoff, a special field dedication was held to thank the Webber International University board members for helping to make the Warriors' new home field a reality.

Webber led 6-0 after one quarter and 12-0 after halftime and never looked back, and the Warriors dominated nearly every statistical category.

The Warriors rushed for a season-high 287 yards and passed for another 207 yards for a grand total of 494 yards, which was also a season-high.

Webber also achieved 22 first downs compared to 17 for STU, and out-possessed the Bobcats by over 15 minutes.

The Warriors scored at least one touchdown in all four quarters and had two touchdown runs from at least 68 yards out.

Four of Webber's five touchdowns come on the ground as three different Warriors rushed for over 60 yards and two of them rushed for over 90 yards.

Davonte Williams led the way with an outstanding 181 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 16 attempts, good for an average of over 11 yards per carry.

As good as Williams was, another Webber running back named Williams, Gerard Williams III , had a breakout game of his own with 91 rushing yards and one touchdown on only seven carries, good for an average of exactly 13 yards per attempt.

Last but not least, Demus Allen added his first career touchdown with 68 rushing yards on eight carries, which put his average at 8.5 yards per rush.

Through the air, senior quarterback Brycen Lee was effective, finishing 17-of-21 for 202 yards and a touchdown. He completed passes to six different Warriors with Jeremiah Lucas leading the way with five catches for 72 yards and a score, followed by Timothy Miller also with five catches but for 45 yards. Christian Acevedo added three grabs for 41 yards, and G. Williams III had two catches for 38 yards.

Despite all of the rushing success and touchdowns on the ground, the first score of the game actually came via the passing variety as Lucas caught a 12-yard pass from Lee to get the scoring started with 6:32 remaining in the first quarter.

From there, Webber scored again 15 minutes later on a huge 70-yard run from D. Williams, and then G. Williams III opened the third quarter with a 68-yard touchdown run to make it 18-0 only a minute and a half after the intermission.

Webber was not done in the third quarter as D. Williams scored again only four minutes after G. Williams III, taking it in from three yards out to make it 25-0.

Late in the fourth quarter, Webber iced the game and milked the clock by continuing to pound the ball on the ground, and it paid off with a nine-yard touchdown run by Allen with under five minutes left to play.

Defensively, the Warriors were active at all levels as Brandon Bell and Jamon Jones both came away with interceptions while Amin Gilbert had a forced fumble.

Saturday's matchup with St. Thomas was the first of four games for Webber football during the month of October. Next up with be another tough game on the road at Faulkner University (Ala.) on Saturday, October 12, in Montgomery, Alabama. Kickoff is scheduled for 12 p.m. Eastern Standard Time / 11 a.m. Central Standard Time.
