MONTGOMERY, Ala. (September 11, 2019) – The Webber International University men's soccer team lost for the first time during its 2019 season on Wednesday in Montgomery, Alabama, dropping a tough 1-0 decision against Faulkner University (Ala.) during First Responders Day at Billy D. Hilyer Stadium.
It was a matchup of two undefeated teams as Webber fell to 3-1 and Faulkner improved to 3-0.
The match featured great defense throughout and was scoreless until the final five minutes of the match when Faulkner finally broke through on what was their 17th shot attempt of the match.
Webber had a great chance to answer and get on the scoreboard on a corner kick by
Agustin Sanda with only three and half minutes left to play, but an offside call ended the threat.
Then, with under a minute left, a beautiful shot attempt by
Bruno Flores lead to miraculous save by the Eagles' goalkeeper, Caio Calado, to help Faulkner hold on to the one-goal win.
In the end, Calado finished with four saves on Webber's nine shot attempts while Webber's goalkeeper,
Felipe Freiria, finished with six saves but suffered the first loss of his career so far.
The Warriors were led in shot attempts by
David Negrin Ruiz and
Mateo Fernandez Sassoni with three apiece.
"The boys played with great heart against a very good Faulkner team," spoke Head Coach
Neil Cockburn. "Even though I felt we may fade away in the last 15 minutes, as this was out third match in five days, our fitness was still at a top level thanks to our strength and conditioning coach and nutritionist,
Chris Slavin. The last five minutes of the match, we missed two great opportunities from
Sebastian Kreiss and
Nikita Muniz. However, I can't take away from Faulkner's talented team. They made our defense work today and finished their chance to win the match."
Next up will be a huge matchup for Webber as the Warriors will return home next Wednesday on September 18 to host Crooked Lake rival Warner University at 4 p.m.
