BABSON PARK, Fla. (September 18, 2019) – The Webber International University men's soccer team scored twice within a three-minute span during the first half on Wednesday afternoon at Warrior Field to defeat its Crooked Lake rival, Warner University, 2-1.
It was the first time since 2016 that Webber men's soccer (4-1 overall) earned a win over Warner (2-3), something Webber did twice that year, both times also by scores of 2-1.
The first goal for Webber came from
Chris Lyon, with the assist by
David Negrin Ruiz, 28:36 into the match. It was a header to the upper 90 off of a corner kick.
The second goal came from
Elies Sebbouh, with the assist by
Bryan Mejia, 31:18 into the action.
Warner cut its deficit in half during the 69th minute with a header into the upper 90 by Daniel Rodriguez.
From there, Warner had a shot blocked in the 74th minute, a shot high and a shot saved by Warrior goalkeeper
Felipe Freiria in the 83rd minute, another shot high in the 86th minute, and a header wide in the 87th.
Rodriguez led both teams with nine shots and four shots on goal. For Webber,
Rodrigo Flores Iraheta led with four shots, half of which were on goal, and was followed by
Matheus Gomes with three shots, two of which were on goal.
Negrin Ruiz,
Mateo Fernandez Sassoni, Sebbouh and
Alvaro Nagel Diaz all added two shots as well, while Freiria made six saves in the goal.
"Today was a great win for the lads," said Head Coach
Neil Cockburn. "It was our first win against Warner since 2016. We played extremely well in the first half, however we could have done better in the second half. Warner played well and played hard, and it was a typical Webber-Warner game with lots of passion and heart from both teams."
The Warriors will remain at home for a 4 p.m. nonconference matchup with Ave Maria University on Saturday, September 21, in Babson Park, Florida.
