BABSON PARK, Fla. (April 30, 2019) – The 2019 Sun Conference Baseball Championship tournament has been set, and the third-seeded Webber International University baseball team will play against No. 5-seeded Keiser University at 6 p.m. to wrap up the first day of the tournament on Thursday, May 2, at FITTEAM Ballpark of the Palm Beaches in West Palm Beach, Florida. The Warriors will be playing to defend their 2018 Sun Conference Tournament championship.
In its 26th and final season under the only head coach in the history of Webber baseball,
Brad Niethammer, Webber finished its regular season 33-18 overall and 14-10 in The Sun Conference. In addition to the Warriors being correctly picked to finish third in The Sun Conference preseason poll, each of the top four spots and five of the top six in the TSC standings were picked correctly.
"We are excited to have a chance to repeat our TSC Tournament championship," said Coach Niethammer. "We know this conference is very tough and you have to bring your 'A' game each time out. We look forward to that challenge."
The Warriors won five of their eight TSC series on the season and earned two three-game sweeps in TSC action. One of those sweeps was against Webber's opponent on Thursday, Keiser (32-20 overall, 13-11 TSC), which the Warriors defeated by a close score of 4-3 on Friday, March 22, in Babson Park, Florida, before coming back the next day and reaching double-digit runs in both games to win by scores of 13-6 and 12-5 on Saturday, March 23.
2019 represents the seventh straight 30-win season for the Warriors under Niethammer as Webber also finished third in the conference standings and qualified for the league's postseason tournament for the fourth straight year. Webber will now be seeking its third straight appearance in the NAIA National Championship Opening Round.
In the NAIA Baseball Coaches' Top 25 poll, Webber was ranked No. 18 in the preseason edition of the poll on November 6, came back into the poll at No. 24 during the second regular-season edition on March 19, and then jumped from No. 25 to No. 19 during the two most recent versions of the poll on April 16 and April 30.
The winner of Webber vs. Kesier will play the winner between second-seeded St. Thomas University and fifth-seeded Warner University at 6 p.m. on Friday, May 3, while the loser will play the winner between top-seeded Southeastern University and sixth-seeded Thomas University at 2:30 p.m. on Friday.
The tournament is a double-elimination format beginning with three games on Thursday, Friday and Saturday before the championship matchup on Sunday with the winner earning an automatic bid to the NAIA National Championship Opening Round.
