Game Recap: Softball |

Softball comes back to steal game one in eight innings against No. 20 USCB

BABSON PARK, Fla. (April 24, 2019) – In game one against No. 20 the University of South Carolina Beaufort on Wednesday, the Webber International University softball team came from behind 1-0 in the bottom of the seventh inning to win it 2-1 in eight innings; but unfortunately in game two, the Warriors were no-hit and defeated 10-0 in only five innings.

During Webber's comeback seventh inning in game one, the Warriors pulled off a double steal to put runners on second and third base with one out, leading to the game-tying run by Beatriz Navarro on a dropped fly out to shallow center field.

Then, with the international tiebreaker rule in effect in the eighth inning, the Warriors' third baseman Sabrina Hebding made a great heads up defensive play to take a ground ball and throw home to catcher Victoria Atkinson to keep the go-ahead run from scoring with one out.

Webber took advantage of that momentum in the bottom half of the eighth as Alyssa Rodriguez laid down her second sacrifice bunt of the game to move Daisy Riggleman to third base with one out. From there, a double down the right field line by Cassidy Roberts, just far enough away from the outstretched glove of a diving outfielder, was all she wrote as the Warriors earned the much-needed game one win.

Junior Emma Maitland (10-5) reached the 10-win mark on the season with a great eight innings pitched allowing only four hits and no earned runs.

Maitland, who also had to work around four walks and two hit by pitches, finished with what was her ninth complete game of the year and third straight complete game performance. In fact, Maitland has now finished with a complete game in five of her last six outings, and has not allowed any earned runs in each of her last 19 innings spanning three games.

Suffering her first loss of the season for USCB was starting pitcher Canyon Crosby, who was previously 7-0 up to that point in the season.

In game two, however, USCB's Sloan Doucey (10-3), also reached the 10-win mark on the season, but even more impressively, she held the Warriors to no hits and no walks through all five innings. The only Warriors to reach against Doucey were via a two-out error in the second inning, a one-out error in the fourth inning, and a leadoff hit by pitch by Cassidy Roberts in the fifth.

Meanwhile, the Sand Sharks' offense responded to its game one defeat by belting out 14 hits in only five innings against the Warriors' pitching staff, including four hits in the very first inning and seven hits, six of which were in a row with one out, in their five-run third inning.

"It was nice to see some fight in our girls today that first game," spoke Head Coach Kristy Burton. "They came out with confidence and left it all on the field against a very good program in USCB. The second game we struggled mentally as a team and couldn't make the adjustments we needed at the plate. Overall I am happy with the split and look forward to our Senior Day on Saturday against Keiser."

After the win in game one, Webber (23-17 overall, 12-10 TSC) was only one win away from tying USCB (36-10, 14-8) in The Sun Conference standings, but now, the Warriors have dropped all the way to fifth place in the TSC standings, and will need at least one win against Keiser University this Saturday on Senior Day to guarantee a spot in the conference's postseason tournament.

Webber's Senior Day will start at 12 p.m. on Saturday, April 27, as the Warriors face an uphill battle against a Seahawks team that swept Webber less than two weeks ago on April 13 in West Palm Beach, Florida.
